I think Vietnam has progressing rapidly seing what they had to endure in the past. First they had fall under the mighty Han dynasty and later the expanding Chinese empire assimilated a number of small bordering nations politically and culturally. Although Vietnam spent 1,000 years under Chinese rule, it succeeded in throwing off the yoke of its powerfull neighbour. I think the famous warrior from this war was Tong Duc Than, you will see a statue of him when u go to saigon right in front of Ben Than Market Then came the French and they had a full 99 years of rule there, as you all would have witnessed the reminance of french architecture there, of course you will get more in Hanoi. (But if you really want to experience the french in Vietnam, go to Dalat.) Then world war 2 - the Japs occupied Vietnam for a bit. The defeat of the Japanese in Vietnam during World War II, left a power vacuum, which the Communists rushed to fill. Their initial success in staging uprisings and in seizing control of most of the country by September 1945 was partially undone, by the return of the French a few months later. Only after nine years of armed struggle was France finally persuaded to relinquish its colonies in Vietnam. Then with the power of communist in north Vietnam, the south wanted to be democratic, hence the war between the two erupted. The south then seeked help from the Americans and of course the americans being americans rushed here only to get their butts kicked. This lasted for 25 years. The Americans made it look through movies and all like as if they were the victims. In actual fact they were the crooks. In 1975 after a peace treaty was signed a bunch of B52 bombers droped bomb in parts of Hanoi, if you go to Hanoi you will see and hear the stories. It was on christmas day and it was a celebration turn nightmare. Okow where in vietnam did you stay ? I hope you visited the Chu Chi ( pronounced gucci ) tunnels and ride the delta on the day trip. If you wanna shop cheap in Saigon dont go to Ben Than Market. Most cab drivers will take u there. Go to An Doh Market cheaper... Hope you had a great time there Okow.
