Went for the Bar@Buena Vista concert last night with Zaki. It was a celebration of Cuba's "golden age". I learnt a bit more abt Cuban music and the famous the Buena Vista Social Club. It was tremendous - the main stars were definitely not from any of our era... (unless we have 80 year olds here in the club). The Bar @ Buena Vista features the original bartender, 75-year-old Arturo Lucas, and recreates the Havana night spot of 1940s and '50s, complete with bar and bottles, bandstand, dancers and even the smoke of several fat Cuban cigars! Also featured was Lucas' favourite partner, the diva Siomara Valdes. Valdes is larger than life (hehe figuratively and literally), she sings, moves and gyrates... yummy! More memorable are the three Cuban "grandfathers": tres player Maracaibo, pianist Maestro Rubalcaba (boy, could he tinkle notes!) and singer Reynaldo Creagh. Rubalcaba (80) and Maracaibo (81) "play their instruments with a lifetime's worth of love for this music, and a passion for performing" ... when cuban music was no longer in fashion in the 70s to 80s, they took up jobs as cab drivers and odd jobworkers...but their passion for music still thrived.. Creagh who is 87 has a rich expressive dreamy voice - and a pelvis that still remembers how to gyrate.. . It was a night of songs (some we could sing along .. well parts of anyways) and dance... the salsa classes werent a total waste! And wish i that i would still be dancing at the age of 87!
