Good day all sifus,I have been browsing a couple of coolant manufacturers' websites, and I came across this term called, "straight water". any idea what it means? take a look at the lubeguard kool-it webpage for the context. http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/radiator_koolit.htmlapparently, straight water reduces temperature better than "water+coolant" (see red bar).cheers

straight water means 100% H2O..

It just a slang word like "do you take your wiskey straight or you prefer to mix with some ice cube."

mixture means mixing with 50% coolant and 50 % water..

That website is using actually trying to say that the temperature is running lower with the coolant mixed with water without the anti freeze added.

malaysia car don't need anti-freeze.

Thanks. me not a regular drinker, so...:)

damn, i wonder y the workshop put antifreeze into my bimmer...:stupid: guess i'll give this kool-it a try.

this info was given by redline US technical person, Redline 'water wetter' mixture
example: if your cooling/radiator capacity is 8 litre

1) add full bottle of water wetter (i think around 355ml)
2) add 15% of coolant (any brand) of the total cooling capacity = 1.2 litre
3) the balance all add water until full

i think this mixture apply to kool-it as well

yes jarance is right, we dun need anti-freeze, we need anti-rust, but most of the coolant in the market is the mixture of the 2 above if i am not mistaken.

Rust should not be a problem for our cooling system. The cooling system of an UDM consist of the following:-

1. Radiator (Copper or Aluminium)
2. Rubber Hose (Rubber)
3. Water Pump (Aluminium or plastic)
4. Thermostat (Aluminium)
5. Engine block (Aluminium)
6. External Fan.

Rust is usually formed when there is ferrous material (iron) in the water medium. Our "tap" water contained many added material. Look at how often you have to clear the filter near the "tap meter" at your home and you will know what I mean.

We term this type of water as "hard" water. If you boil water in a kettle, you will find a thin layer of scaling on the inner surface of the kettle over time. The scaling will prevent or retard the heat transfer.

Similarly, in our UDM, the process is reverse of boiling water process. Heat is generated from the combustion engine. Water is pass thru the engine block via water jacket in the engine block. Water circulation is assist by water pump.

When water temperature reached a certain set point, the thermostat will open and divert/pass the water to the radiator. Radiator heat up and another temperature switch will switch on the electric fan. (If the car use fan cluth, then cooling fan will spin faster!!!).

Meanwhile, the water's impurity will start to scale the inner wall of the cooling system. This will make the engine to run at higher temperature as the heat cannot transfer effectively from the radiator.

so ideally we hv to use filtered or distilled water to ensure there is no metallic substances in the radiator.

from what i see in lubegard's chart in the link posted earlier, its cooling ability is better WITHOUT the presence of the antifreeze/anti-corrosion fluid.

so can I safely use water + water wetter/koolit in my beemer, minus the BM antifreeze/coolant?

if you are considering water wetter, do make double sure it's the real stuff you are buying.

there are some fake stuff out there which is just water and some colouring.

Not metallic substance but mineral compound.

yup, just go to a RO(reverse omossis) venting machine with empty bottles and fill it.

Redline Water Wetter already has anti-rust and anti-corrosion properties, will protect aluminium parts also, but will not protect magnesium parts... so, for the newer BMW engines, be careful... Anyway, for tropical usage, there's no need to use coolant (which has anti-freeze thrown in), just Water Wetter with plain water, in fact this will give the best performance, according to the marketing talk on the label itself...

Daniel, how to watch out for fake Redline Water Wetter? I know the real one has a certain smell, especially if there's spillage or small leak, the smell from the stain will be there for days, even after the stain looked like it has dried... always causing me anxiety...

I've just got myself a bottle of Lubegard's Kool-It. The label states that one should use 15% antifreeze/coolant for street driven cars with a/c. (assuming a/c means air conditioning). I'm not sure if this applies to cars in temperate countries only, where the radiator water is needed for the heater core to function. Will hv to drop them a mail to be sure.

there is no reply from lubegard. ah, wth, i'm gonna pour a bottle. i've already used it in my other car, and the car seems to be purring now...:burnout:
