Yesterday was driving back from KL to Penang. Went out of the Juru Toll in 2nd gear steptronic mode and straight up to 6.2K rpm and it changed gear..then all the way up to 5K rpm in 3rd gear. Slowed down due to traffic in 3rd gear and switched back to D. However, after a minute...seems like one of the ignition coil gave away. No power and car was shaking like crazy in idle. Then in the morning, started the car and nothing wrong...What the hell is the problem?????

nothing wrong with your car... you just woken your engine and all it's electronics..

wait for a day or two and try that stunt again..

if it happens again, turn off your engine and wait for a minute or 10 sec.. then start.. if got again, then send the car for a check up.

regards.

maybe it is the coil... the innermost coil to be exact.. this seem to be a common trait for the N42 Valvy...
in other parts of the world, this is a recall item... Somehow over here, recall seem not to be in their vocab...

However, do monitor the symptoms for few more days then maybe go to the workshop to properly diagnose it.. but make sure the symptom is there when the mechanic check on it...

Sometimes, the gremlins like to hide when someone is checking on it and then resurface later when u're driving it.... playing hide and seek with the mechanic.. :D

Which is always the case.... damn sian one like that.

When bring to mechanic, all ok. After leaving the mech's place for 10 minutes, the gremlins surface. Go back again, no problem again. :D

I think this issue was brought up before in this forum and personally had seen a friend's car with similar problem. Drove to the workshop, car was idling erratically. Mechanic performed a diagnosis and said everything seemed okie but he mentioned it could be the coils or ECU. Owner drove it back and it was silky smooth....few days later the problem cropped up again!

Changed all 4 coils to the new bosch coils a month ago....so..shouldn't have the ignition coil failure according to my mechanic.....

Drove for dinner yesterday...the car pooped again...darn it...after dinner...started the car again..same..pooping engine....went home and opened up the engine cover to check the coils....seems like one of the coils is not properly inserted..but...why why why after a month????

Doesn't seem to have a good explanation :beaten: ..took out all 4 coils and double checked to make sure all 4 coils are fully inserted....started the car...drove around....so far so good.... :)

Need to pray hard that it is that loose barger..and nothing else...

wow Ade, since when u are so DIY ... hehehe.

I had the same problem 2 months ago and all my four ignition coils were changed. BMW is not a reliable car at all.
