to all sifus, can pls explain if the recommended tyre size n profile are critical? are they for comfort or performance, or a balance of both? any safety issues? what's the worst that cud happen if pandai2 change to a different size? much concerned on the safety aspect than anything else.. thanks in advance for all the help..

In general the main concern when plus-sizing a tyre is the overall diameter. It should not exceed 3% of the OEM size. Most of the time when it is exceeded then you'll start having problem with the tyre rubbing the fender, speedometer and the worse scenario is the car DSC/traction control/ABS. Other than that will be the mechanical stress to the arms and so on which will lead to premature failure.

excellent info dr zul.. thanks..

anyone else who cud provide more info on this?

also, i always thought that wider tyres wud provide better handling n traction, both in straightline and cornering.. though louder road noise n prone to tramlining.. how true is this? still dont understand the whole principal of it.. :(

Not sure if the following link will answer your questions, but you'll learn something about tire and wheel.

About Tire and Wheel...

hth.
thanks! excellent find! really gud info!

p/s: admin/mod, maybe u cud 'stick' the link for future references?

I don't think so 3er,

The standard size for e46 is actually 16". Mine come with 17". So now with 19" if refer to standard 16" it will be 'plus 3'.

My previous Honda Civic OEM was 14". I put on 'plus 3', 17".

So, I think the max. should be 'plus 3'. anything more than that you'll have to increase the diameter to accomodate the appropriate/available side wall height of the tyre. After 'plus 3' you'll also have to do extensive modification of the fender or tyre well apart from it will alter all the other things mention earlier.

Zul,

Sure. Feel free to disagree. Its an open forum afterall.

Perhaps i didnt elaborate enough (read: laziness). However i made the +2 upgrade statement as a reasonable compromise between aesthetics / performance and cost (of maintenance and other associated upgrades - ie. tyres, suspension parts, fenders, etc.)

However YMMV.

Sorry 3er if I have offended you. Not my intention.

Totally agreed with you, if you want to compromise between aesthetic, performance and cost then 'plus 2' will be better choice then 'plus 3'. But being a crazy/mad people once you put a plus 2 then see a car looks nicer on plus 3 you will definitely get itchy. I have used plus 2 before change to plus 3 last year, in term of comfort I do not think there is much different between plus 2 and plus 3.

The main thing you all should consider if you put on plus 2 or plus 3 is the type of rims and tyres used. If possible don't use replica because I believe it is not as strong as original rims. This is from my own experience.

Then choice of tyre depends on your style of driving. If you put a 'good' tyre on plus 3 it will be as same as plus 2 with 'not so good' tyre in term of comfort.

You must also keep in mind that a plus 3 tyre have lesser side wall height. Therefore the 'flex' during hard cornering is less. However if the tyre do break away and skidded on plus 3 the break away point before loss of grip is more sudden than the plus 1 or plus 2. Thats why on normal tyre you'll heard a lot of screeching sound before the tyre break away but on plus 3 it is less and sometime no sound before it break away and loss grip.

No offence taken. Its just that i was too lazy to write more to explain. My bad.
