If only the head gasket is burnt, you will only need a top overhaul, which will cost half of what's quoted. I went thru an engine change on my previous e39 with an M52 engine. After opening up the head only we discovered that piston #6 was holed(a small one) hence nil compression.I decided for an engine chg based on the 10 year relationship that I have with the shop owner and that I know the mechanics that work there pretty well and that they know that I am a DIY guy and am well versed with Engineering in general. Also I made sure that the shop owner knows what I expect of their work and I got my car back with a very good 2nd hand engine with no issues. So ,the choice is really yours bro..........
