a newbie here in this forum, just brought back my bmw e46 2001 316ise manualfrom uk after having worked there for 2 yrs,.just want to know the legal limit of having my car windows tinted over here..the jpj website gives very unspecific details,..anything less than 70% transparency..another thing ,..my reverse gear is slightly stiff , initial check at the bmw centre kuantan suggest to changge the gear box and oil.. ?what say you all.many thanks

badmd, welcome home! :)

Assume you're talking about your window tints and not mirror tints as per the title of your post. There is a JPJ statement on enforcement in pg 3 of the Star today (18Nov) It says minimum 70% penetration for the front and 50% for the rear and sides.

For stiff gears, the first remedial action to try would be to change the gearbox oil. If the BMW centre guy actually suggested that you change the gearbox, it would be very surprising indeed. Sticky gears can also be caused by the clutch not disengaging properly, and this usually starts with difficulty in engaging reverse and 1st gear. A relatively easy problem to fix.

Out of curiousity, if you don't mind my asking, how did you get the AP to import your car, and what duty rate did you have to pay for your 5 year-old E46?

many thanks for the reply,
i agree the title was misleading , but i'm glad to have had a reply.also checked out the star report today , now i can safely proceed with my cosmetic project without the constant worry of JPJ hunters
i think i'll probably proceed with the gear oil change first , and take it from there.
spent a fortune on changing the disc brakes when it first arrived here ..too long at the north port klang , rusted everything up.
got my ap thru the incentive scheme for encouraging specialists / experts to come back from overseas ,.special ap without tax...
getting the special ap is the hard part.
you may also get a personal ap , provided you've the right papers ,..and the tax would would be based on the devaluation car price base on present currency xchange, as well as the import duty price,..
eg , a 2nd hand bmw e46 318ise 2001 worth £8000 ( 8000 x 7 = rm 56,000, one would expect a duty price of at least rm 28000 - 33000 in one lump sum , making a total of rm 84000 - 89,000 .. pretty affordable for the middle class income people i would say, this excludes the port duty price and the rent of the parking space till your papers get s the all clear.
any reasonable bmw specialists mechanics here or in kota bharu / terengganu that you know of ?

thanks again for the reply.

Wow, specialist AP huh? Tax free car - envy, envy!

Sorry, can't help you with east coast mechanics, maybe other forumers can. Check the clutch play adjustment too when changing the gearbox oil. That's a very likely cause of difficulty engaging R and 1st, and very easy to fix. The synchromesh can't cope if the clutch isn't disengaging enough and will get damaged sooner or later. Then you WILL be faced with a GB rebuild  Your clutch plates may also get worn, if they're not already.

Have you tropicalised your cooling system and aircond yet?

planning to get it done soon, so far the aircond is working fine..do you i should AB for this particular acclimatisation or any air cond specialist would do ?

If your aircond is adequate, then why touch it? Increasing the capacity of your cooling system should be the priority or you may have an engine overheat situation one day.

It's really your choice whether to do it at AB or outside, but personally for an important running component I would go to AB. Then it's warrantied too.

thanks for the warning dumeort , will keep a look out.
the M3 was rather an atractive option , but given the purpose of being a more family orientated car but still able to make heads turn, i had to resist the temptation of getting one.Anyways , a bimmer is and will always be a bimmer , right ?

gear oil change????

hi mate, welcome on board i am new ni here as well.... too bad i can't bring back my 330ci i just came back too... i was wondering why do you need to change the gearbox oil.... i was told bmw parklane that the gearbox is a seal unit and there is no way you will be able to change the oil..... it better to check and enquire carefully before doing anything....
