hmmm... well found the answer it wont cost more than 1 K...

No need to change rack whatsoever...

Its either the tie rod or Item No 2 "a flexible coupling connecting the lower steering column"

If all fails Blame the Tierods :)

Hope this will also help fellow Bimmerz...

DO NOT CHANGE STEERING RACK unless it really is broken...

DO NOT CHANGE POWER STEERING PUMP Unless you feel steering like lorry (check power steering fluid first- :p)... and of coz the hosing it may be the cause

Other than that im so happy... 2moro will go for parts shopping and the head to any local mechanic

hi,

I tried looking for the part no in realoem but there is none. How is your car now? May I know how much to replace the coupling?

No more problem.. car is in grade A+ handling (at least better than last time)... Parts is about RM 500++ (a friend in SG send it over) Its the whole Steering Coupling Knuckle Joint and installation done by a friend mechanic for RM50 :p

good post. The e46 version comes with a rubber washer/dampner. I heard thts the culprit. A friend of mine is replicating tht same washer/dampner into a steal version. Generally wear n tear is bcos of tht rubber part. Unlike the e36 its in steel so theres no wear n tear. He showed me the steel versionnof the e36 and it makes sense... coz he then showed mine... wear n tear and the same problem ure facing.

Interesting ... any pics of it? I think if replacing the rubber part with a steel item it would transmit road vibrations straight to the steering wheel ...

This has been discussed some time ago, I think the conclusion was, the rubber steering coupling was designed and specified in rubber to break when in a collision, so the steering column wont break your chest in the the impact. By replacing the rubber part with a metal one, the failsafe is removed and the steering column will head straight to your chest in the event of a collision.

Rubber coupling:

Metal coupling:

(I'm putting up a generic coupler, not necessarily BMW ones above)

Bro i just check from bmwfans the item 4 there called it Swivel joint with universal joint and for my car there was no item 2.
I always feel slightly knock on the steering when come across the un even road will this the culprit ?

Bring more women then bring more worries..................hahahahahhahahahahahaha

To test your steering is the problem of the rubber or not is very easy. Turn your steering when the engine not start , see the steering for free space turn or not. If there is the free space then sure is the rubber that the forumers talking about.

steering coupling needs to changed and ur problem will be solved. i had the same problem.Cost abt 1.2k++

i face the same problem, can i comfirmed the part u change?
Is it the Whole coupling Parts NO.5 or Only change the parts No.2?
Pls advise?

steering coupling is the whole part, they come in a package. i changed mine few months back and my drive feels better - though i spent $$ at the wrong mechanic before found out this was the culprit.
