Hi,I am buying a 1994 E34 525i.It has a release lever on the steering column, but my mechanic says that there is no adjustment mechanisim, neither for up/down nor in out.Shouldn't there be one or both on this model? What's involved in fitting the mechanism?

it should be.. it can only move in-out..

check with the steering column at below the dash to confirm..or maybe it's stuck ?

Release Lever is there

The release lever is there, but the mechanic says the steering column just cannot be adjusted (?).

take it to a proper bmw mechanic.. i believe it can be done.. the bottom of the shaft is a nut for you to loosen , but not to much, if then too much free play.. sometimes it jams up..

Hmmm

My mechanic said he couldn't find anything - so I'll have to take it to BMW.

He's an ex BMW guy, think he'd know wouldn't you - oh well.

Thanks for the advice PUSSY.

if you bought the car second hand, the chances is the previous owners mechanic may have disabled/lock dead the adjustment. They tend to do this because the e34 has the steering rattling tendency and locking it dead gives it a tighter feel. It can be unlock. my mech did that once for me, but i could not undo it myself....after removing the panels under the steering. Brought it to them and they undid it, but warned me that you may feel more steering rattle. So far..it feels the same to me..
