hi new to this forumtrying to restall my 318i (91). engine jerks a bit on acceleration. just changed new dist cap and rotor and spark plugs, but problem still exist. next to look at is HT cable and coilNot sure if problem is cable or coil. Original cable RM300, coil RM170. Anywhere to get it tested and confirm? No point buying used cable from junk yard ('cos they are as old anyway) Anyone got a good cable for sales? If coil will fix the problem, do mind getting a new coilHelp. Tks.

Welcome to the forum....

Answers will come your way soon...

Engine not smooth can be due to, coil, s/plug cables or even the Air Flow Meter...

s/plug cable can be checked easily, just remove one at a time and see if there's any different when 1 cable is unplug... If the cable is fine, then unplugging it will instantly cause the engine to idle badly... if the cable is bad, unplugging it will cause significant vibration....

Also check if the cable insulation is good or aledi hardened and cracked... bad insulation will cause power leakage, but you'll hear/see spark escaping from the crack insulation or get zapped if your hand gets near it... :p

Try cleaning the AFM, maybe the 'barndoor' flap is not opening or closing smoothly..

Thanks

Checked plug cable. looks good feel good. detected defect in the low voltage cable to the coil. fixed. improved a bit but jerk and knock still there.

AFM cleaned, door now open/close properly (ya, before that it stucked half way, mechanic wanted to change to a used part, but stopped him and clean DIY). Question: if the temperature sensor in the AFM is faulty will this cause the knocking?

Maybe just change the coil and see how.

Thanks

bro,my previous e30 m20b20 osso got this jerking issue and sometimes the engine die off.it was the HT cable and ignition coil..

another way to check for elect leaks is to do it at night in pitch darkness.........see if there's any sparking and electrical arcing around the HT cables and ignition coil.in my case it was really bad....all 6 cables got some degree of leaks

ps. errr...don't do this inspn wih a torchlight :hmmmm2:

damn! just bought the coil for RM170 and didn't make any different to the knocking/jerk...

moots' advice is great. just checked. didn't see any sparking/arcing, but upon holding the cable with my fingers I can see glows at the contact points (ie., cable and finger contacts). DOES THIS MEAN THE HT CABLES ARE BAD ALREADY? Or, is this normal behaviour when you touch the HT cables? The most obvious is the cable from the coil to the dist cap. the cables look good and feel soft though!

Where/who can I get E30 HT cable (used also OK but must be guarantee good) New costs a whooping RM350!

looking forward to some comments/help

thanks
