BMW Longlife is the BMW spec for oils suitable for its range of cars. It's important to use the specified oil for BMWs because its engines are among the most sophisticated in the world. If you just use any cheap oil from a petrol station shelf, don't complain later if you have higher engine wear, higher fuel consumption, and end up with a sludged-up engine. See http://www.castrol.ae/TDS_SDS/other/TDS_SLX%20Professional%20Longtec%20BMW%20LL01.pdf BMW LL-01 (from 2001) is the specified oil for current E90s. So we don't need LL-04 yet and shouldn't use the older LL-98, which I believe can include Group III mineral oils in the blend. LL-01 must be a fully synthetic Group IV oil blend. Group IV is polyalphaolefin oil or PAO for short. World PAO feedstock supply is tight after hurricane Ike off the US gulf coast shut down the ExxonMobil plant in Texas, so prices will remain high. BTW, European lube oil standards are higher than US standards, eg. Europe doesn't allow Group III oils to be called synthetic, but the US does. :) So I think (and hope) that Syntium 3000 originates in Europe. :top: We do not have a PAO plant here, so please don't think Petronas Syntium 3000 is a 'local' oil. Neither can you get LL-01 oil off the shelf easily. Whatever is available is imported for factory and dealer fill. Quantities are minute by world standards, as you can imagine. My personal opinion: all oils degrade from the first km of use. Even Group IV oils perform at an acceptable level only up to 10-12,000km. I would never wait until 25,000km before changing the oil.
