I have both a E46 325 (year 2001 like ur pal too) and a E60 530. Have tried to go outstation with the E46 before. Very uncomfortable for the people at the back. And if kids are still young, then boot space is also not enough when you have to pack baby cots, strollers, etc...E60 on the other hand, superb comfort and space. Boot space also large enough for most needs. But driving pleasure still the E46 is better to chuck around. My advise to your pal?
