My e39 has a GSM phone and the problem is it only works with the old Celcom prepaid card. I've tried various postpaid and prepaid simcards and none worked! except for this old Celcom prepaid sim card that came with the car. I would like to switch it to a postpaid number. Anyone out there experienced similar problems? Any workarounds?

The phone is sim locked. Take it to phone dealer and remove the lock ny decoding it

Would any phone dealer be capable of unlocking any GSM phones? I'm sure that i'll get a funny look from a phone dealer when i ask him to do a sim unlock on my car phone. Do you know of any phone dealer that I can go to?

Mobile equipment brand / model: Motorola International 2700

Cadmus, did you ever solve your problem? I'm having the same problem with Maxis.

Pekmen, no luck with Digi and Maxis for me. I only got it working on a Celcom prepaid card but not on the postpaid card. The Celcom prepaid card that i'm using is really old, i'm not sure if the current prepaid cards will work. Good luck.

Phone SIM Card problem solved

I've finally managed to solve the problem! :) (after going through tons of forums)

Just to recap, for those that might not have read this whole thread...

Problem
When I put my SIM card (Maxis) into the reader slot under the phone handset in the car, I get a message saying "Check Card". It appears that the SIM reader under the phone only works for very old SIM cards.

Solution
On the left hand side of the boot, there is a device which operates the phone.

1) Open the CD Changer box on the left side of the boot.
2) Above the CD Changer, hanging from the top of the boot, you will see another device. It looks a bit like a CD ROM Drive.
3) Shine a light between this box and the rear lights. You will see a slot.
4) You need to have a full SIM card, not just the chip. If you don't, you will have to get an adapter or get your phone company to replace it for you. Slide in your SIM card with the chip facing down.

Your phone should now work! I'm using a post-paid Maxis card, not the new 3G chip card but one generation back. I'm not sure if it will work with the new 3G SIM.

If you are a Maxis post-paid customer, you can get a supplementary line for just RM10 a month.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Pekman. I'll try to search for the gsm box rite after i get back my car from the workshop. Transmission 'bocor', leaking ATF badly ... :(

Ramoura: you should try searching for the phone on ebay

Hi cadmus, now that I've got the phone working, I've just realised that the manual I got and the actual phone are different.

The phone in my manual has a phonebook icon but my actual phone doesn't. My actual phone also has an MR and M+ button, but the manual doesn't have these.

Because of these differences, I don't know how to store numbers in my phone. The instructions in the manual don't work. The existing SIM card is full of phone numbers but none of this is showing up. I also cannot receive any SMS.

I'm not sure if this is due to the phone not working properly with a newer type SIM card or if it's some other reason.

Any ideas?

My phone has the phonebook icon, no MR/M+ buttons. I've no problems saving the numbers on the simcard and the phone itself.

I'm currently using an old Maxis postpaid GSM card (i think it's 3 years old). No problems sending and receiving SMS messages from the phone.

Maybe you should visit www.realoem.com and find out which GSM phone model is installed on your car.

I did do a seach and the part number is the same as my phone.

realoem.com Part Number (84118375038)

My Maxis card is newer than 3 years, so maybe it's the card.

I believe my car is an import and the phone manual is for a similar phone, but not exactly the same.
