sorry to hear about your car, daniel... i must say that my dad had no complaints about his E21 323i all these years of owning her... she has been really, really reliable not one day at all failing to start even if she was left for a few days unless of course the battery went flat and was time for a new replacement. only when the car was bought over by me, she failed to start 5 times and that only during the initial orientation period with me, the new owner (merajuk la, i assume...) after that few weeks she has never failed to start not even once.... (touch wood) or stalled on me.... my dad does not drag the engine at all on 1st and 2nd gear... pulls a little when on 3rd and 4th gear to blow the engine a little bit, usually not more than 4000 rpm.... likewise i too have adopted that kind of driving style... not pushing the engine.... traffic lights drag starts definitely a no no for me... if its a manual, pls dont ever hold the clutch at the lights or stagnant traffic,... that will definitely accelerate wear on the clutch plates and components.... and of course the maintenance schedule, which i follow to the dot, sometimes even before the expected mileage.... only the really, really expensive parts than i would have to put on hold, until i can save and accumulate the cost for replacing the said parts. frankly, i do believe that the built quality on the older CBU cars are better than the present ones except that the older models are rust prone due to the fact that the steel used during that period were not galvanised steel and had bad drainage design contributing to the problem... cars are like women, if you treat them well with lots of love and respect... they will in return perform well without any problems and unexpected failures.... if you expect them to perform always at peak output all the time, than you have to expect that the wear and tear rate will be faster/burn out in other words.... YES! i do believe cars can get the burn out syndrome just like us humans... and i definitely believe the cars we own are all attached to us emotionally and 'alive' if i may use the word.... this one you will have to figure out for yourselves...if not, pls go watch the movie Herbie... that will give you a clue of what i am trying to put across. and i am a keen believer that stock or standard setup rules... eg: like oversized rims and modifying of engine to boost output, i am not in favour of such accs items... not only that i dont have the extra dough to indulge but that will put undue stress to the effected or related components and that means more money to spend which i have limited access to.... so stock is the way to go for me! :ok: i am not here to teach anybody to drive or on how maintain their cars but just sharing with you all a little bit on how i treat my car.... ....lastly maybe its pure bad luck if one's problem are endless like daniel's.... that i would not know... but i sympathise with daniel. cheers ;)
