Maybe some of the gurus would know the answer to this. Saw one of the threads that mentioned turning key to position 1 while holding down the trip reset button. Did this on a few cars (e36, 97 - 99) displays a 6 digit number on bottom left hand corner of cluster for +/- 3sec. Is this the original mileage (stored on the ecu) cos if it is,, what I've found is the mileage on the odometer was way out (3x lower) than what was displayed?? Unless the 6 digit number displayed when performing checks was some sort of serial number???

Was told by some second hand car dealers that it takes about 15 mins or so to "alter" the milage. After all we're in boleh-land, anything's possible.

There is a post similar to this http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/inde...?showtopic=7949
Mouse,

The post you mentioned addresses the question whether tampering with the odometer is possible. I'm assuming it is - after all everything's possible. What I'm curious about is wether the method of checking the actual mileage which was posted in some thread acurate.? So far have tried it and have seen figures like 346xxx , 300xxx. Could these numbers be some sort of serial number or the actual mileage?? Cheers...

R u sure these are the mileage or some serial number 300XXX mileage is a alot man, u definately need an over haul.

tkew,

Exactly! At least a top job and timing chain change. That's why I was wondering if anyone out there might have an answer to this one. If u can get hold of an e36 97 - 99, just try it and see what you get. I'll try it again and record the trip miles. If this then adds up to the number 3xxxxx then it would mean that it probably IS the actual mileage recorded deep within the ecu..

burn,

notice u drive a 97 318i. What does yours show when u hold trip meter down and turn key to position I? Does the number that flashes briefly tally with you odometer miles. Try it out and see what you get....

Cheerio..

Cheerio..
will try to do that on my next refill...
always keep track on my mileage usage before and after.

Tried this again with a 99 E36. There seems to be 5 different sets of numbers all with "km" as the unit. They all appear in sequence...

1. 3xxxxx
2. xxxxx
3. xxxx
4. xxx
5. x.x

What the hell, looks like 5 trip meters. Then no.1 should be TOTAL mileage and no.5 when the car was last switched off.!!!! Don't tell me no one has seen this. Must drop by one of the bimmer specialists and get them to check (diag) the car!

Cheers...

Last week my friend bought a used X-trial, KM was 17K. but when he took the car to Tan chong for service, they told him the last service record they have for the car was been serviced last August which 33K. That means the meter has been tempered by the Second hand shop dealer.... He felt like shit, kena potong already.

most of the car being temper is on the vdo meter, one part that they cant do anything is the gearbox ECU, may be some can chk this out coz the gearbox ecu does track the mileage also and they cant change this record.
Got this info from a mech friend of mine may be some guys here can verify this....

Try read this attachment:
e21jbk,

Thanks for the attachement. Tried it out and yes! the numbers with VIN ID matched that of car. The rest I cant make a comparison, but the VIN ID is a damn neat feature, at least can ensure car and ecu not swapped / potong etc... The ECU just writes the mileage to the dashboard / odometer so any changes would have to be made on the ecu, just like comp. to monitor. If anything is changed, someone with the right tool and knowledge will definately be able to retrieve the info from the ecu cos the dash is just a display panel.

Cheerio.....

 Does this also mean that someone with the right tool and knowledge are able to to change the info of the mileage from the ecu??

Salesmen, wannabe BMW engineers and self thaught mechs willl say it can be done. Even second hand car sales ppl say they have been conned by owners - maybe just to shift the blame if they're caught out. Wether its done professionally without any trace is another question... I really wouldn't know, maybe someone out there knows???

Cheers...
