Install an alarm system and wire a central lock switch to the alarm system. That is what I did.

If you can use your key to unlock all doors, that means that your central locking actuator is working.

E36 does not have central lock/unlock switch at the central console. However, E46 does. The central control switch for e36 is actually located in the driver door, the passenger door and the rear boot. i.e. any door that have a key hole for your key except the glove compartment.

If you push down the driver side door lever, it will lock all doors. Similarly, if you pull up the door lever, it will open all doors. If I am not mistaken, you can do this at the front passenger door lever as well.

However, since you can lock and unlock using your key (presume driver door from the outside), there is a possibility that the door lever rod and the door key slot is dislocated.

owh.. how come my car wen i pull the door lock on the driver side it doesnt unlock all doors? imagine i have to turn off the engine if i want to open the back bonnet.. so leceh.. cant i just put a switch n link it to the central locking?

So you cannot open using the front passenger or the driver side?

Just the bonnet keyhole can open. Please confirm.

I think I know what I might know the problem if you can tell me which model/year of your car. I have to look at the wiring schematic to be sure.

97 e36.. if i switch of the engine all the locks will be opened.. but if the engine is on and then i want to get sumthing from the bonnet it cant be opened.. i tried pulling the lock off the driver and the passenger the lock still doesnt open..

ermm.. how come in the e36 manual.. there is a central locking switch? are those overseas model or something..

If you look at the wiring schematic, the door control power is supplied via fuse F7. Check this fuse first. Highlight in RED.
The rear boot is circuit is circle in BLUE. It have a different circuit from the central door locking. That is why the boot switch work and your door switch does not work. Different circuit to the same module.

BTW, didn't know that E36 door automatically unlock when the engine if OFF. This is very unusual. It could be an aftermarket alarm system install. Does anyone have this same feature for their stock E36. I dont have this feature for my E36 and E46.

Hi jarance,

Jz tested my e36 318 '97, yup it doesnt unlock whn i shut dwn the engine...and as far as i noe evrything in my car is still stock standard...i even got the standard lock remote...the black one with autobavaria stamped at the back...i guess its the standard one coz my frens says so,but it doesnt work...planning to get it checked out next week....

everything works fine except i cant unlock from the outside of the driver side door but i can lock it...if i need to unlock i have to go to the front passenger door which unlocks all 4 doors including the bonnet....any idea why i cant do it from the driver side?havent got it checked out yet, maybe next week too...just wanted a few opinions...thx..

busdriver,

Your problem is slight different from ficz. ficz cannot open via front and passenger door but can open via boot lock.

Can yours open from the boot lock? Your problem is can open from passenger door but not the driver door. This means that the fuse #7 is OK. The circuit for the front and passenger door to unlock or lock the door goes to the same point of the central locking module. i.e. they are wired in parallel.

Since you are having problem on the driver side, suggest that you concentrate on the driver door. Possibility could be one the switch is faulty in the actuator or the lock mechanism.
Look at the picture below for more detail. (extract from Bentley Service Manual)

Hi bro,

Yeah mine can open using the boot lock...the only prob is the drivers side door...so u think one of the switch is faulty huh?....gotta get it checked out...thx for the input bro....

Yes, i do have this feature for my E36 1996 CBU. Lock & Unlock utilising Door lever

hi jarance, could it be the same "Brake Switch" problem forummers faced before? that little @##*er can cause chaos to central locking system... located under steeering, inside dashboard...

Sach, the brake switch is connect directly to the "Check Control Module" which in turn is connected to the "Central Locking Module" which in turn is also connected to the "Crash Control Module". yeah, it might cause chaos.

Personally, I have never encounter such problem before so I cannot say it does (100%). Sorry.

However, if the brake switch is faulty, there should be some alarm and also the brake does not work when you press the pedal.

btw, nice brake switch.. 2 pins or 4 pins and how much?

Well, for my 1997 E36 328i, all the doors and trunk unlocked when the engine is shut down. There is no central lock switch in the car. Let say on the way you need to unlock the door and allow someone to get into the car, you just release your inside driver door handle once. It will unlock all the locks. You release the door handle again will open your driver door. Hope this helps.

why i say so is, coz few e36 ers had solve their similar problems wt simply changing this damn switch.. and all their symptoms were diff .. it just mess up the whole locking mechanism.. most recent was a member from malatbimmer..

i cant remember 2/4 pin... they cost around $75-90/=

if workshop really cant detect the problem, i guess no harm trying this cheap option ... ;)
