all sifu, recently my 4pieces new tyres was given nitrogen gas. i don no wat is advantages and disadvantages about tis. can some1 explain to me? using it on PP2 E60. can share with me what is it about "nitorgen vs normal (pump in petrol kiosk air)"? no idea on tis. explanation plz.

normal air has 78% N2 but oso moisture.... So it tend to expand when hot as opposed to 100% N2.. Tyres with N2 will have constant tyre pressure.. Supposedly better ride comfort...

but if you need to re-pump the nitrogen, it will gonna to cost u everytime whenever u wish to pump right? N2 = nitrogen gas?

You should go back to the tyre shop which gave you the Nitrogen gas in the first place, it should be FOC for life. Normally the N2 cost is bundled together with your new tyre purchase, and it's only a one-off payment.

No harm to mix the N2 with the pump at the petrol kiosk if you are in an emergency situation, i.e. fast tyre pressure loss. Then go back to the tyre shop next day, ask them to deflate the tyres and pump with fresh N2 again - FOC as well.

thx for the information given. dud normally how often do we need to re-pump the nitrogen gas? wat is the benefit of having nitrogen gas actually? does it help to consume less petrol while driving on nitrogen?

Yes and no...

if you have it at the right pressure and do held consistent, then less likely it would be underinflated, and hence reduce resistance, and therefore maintain relatively better fuel consumption... at the same time reduces tire wear and hence can use it longer so no need so fast change lor.

you can also reduce the costs of fuel consumption and tire wear but leaving the car in the driveway. it might be nice to wash it once in a while so that you do not need to spend money to refurbish the paintwork due to watermarks and other contaminants. hee hee.

I would say keep your normal practise of checking your tyre pressures constantly (once a week, once a month?). I normally send my car to the tyre shop at least once a month for refilling with N2.

Well, the benefits of nitrogen gas are not really proven AFAIK. As mentioned by Fabian, one of the benefits is constant tyre pressure. Note that when your tyre gets hot, pressures can increase by several PSI using "normal" air. Hence N2 comes into play here.

Since it's usually bundled with new tyres, I just take it without really bothering if it makes any difference ;)

This reminds me... I'm sure when fire was discovered, the cavemen sat around discussing the merits and demerits as well.

Here's how it must have went...

"Ugh... good! Warm! Light! Food tastes better!"

"Argh, ugh... but burn hand, burn cave, burn woman, no good!"

"Osso hard to make, hard to keep, hard work! No good..."

Luckily for us, the first dude prevailed, and we have progressed since then.

So, in answering your questions...

1. why nitrogen - more consistent volume (less expansion with heat), leaks slower compaired to normal air, etc, but for me, mainly because it is QUIETER.

2. How much does it cost? A few ringgit per tire. I can't remember exactly, other than it's negligible.

3. Where can I top up? The place where you got it in the first place, or any tire shop that's kept up w progress. But here's the thing. It hardly leaks, so you hardly need to top up.

As an interesting tidbit, F1 cars use nitrogen, and does the Nissan-GTR. Now, my old car is nowhere near that, but like I said, I like it because it is quieter.

Enjoy.

Well, theoretically it does offer some benefits but for a road going car, I myself didn't feel the difference (Perhaps it will help a F1 car that zooms past the Grand Stand in excess of 330km/hr and having to drive around Sepang for 56 laps with one or two pit stops in between.)

If you remember your Sains Paduan well enough, Nitrogen is an inert gas (resists heat build-up better) and has bigger molecules than oxygen and hence less susceptible to leaks.

That being said, let's not forget that more than 78% of the atmosphere is made up of Nitrogen and the rest are Oxygen (21%), water vapour, argon, carbon dioxide and etc.

Anyway, Nitrogen is cheap. One tank from MOX is less than RM50 ringgit and some of these shops charge RM5 per tire for Nitrogen Gas!!

Cheers

I have tried both air and Nitrogen on the same set of tires on the same day. Nitrogen proved quieter.

Since air is already 78% nitrogen, I will try to negotiate for 78% discount next time... or else I'll buy a tank from MOX and keep in the house.. special service for members, RM1 only...

The main benefit it offers is really less prone to expansion when heated, plus the bigger in molecule size. From these 2 properties, we get:

1. Less leak.
2. Less expansion, so tyre remain soft or original pressure after long distance drive in a hot day, that's why its quieter as claimed my Lee.
3. Lower tyre surface temperature after long distance drive.
4. Heated tyre will have more grip and less wear.. its a natural trade-off.
5. Atmosphere air form water when pressurised, so u get water in your wheels which will rust your iron rim (non alloy rim la) or valve screw.. :D

Result, more comfortable (less expansion after drive), slower tyre wear, less leak.

Applications: Aeroplane tyres, race car tyres, cargo trucks, buses tyres which suffer from extreme heat.

Using on car is a "luxury".. for those that can afford.. :p Perhaps those always travel long distance..

My E90 is only used for office commuting within the same township, thus the tyres are hardly up to temperature.. so very comfortable too and have not refill air for 7 months lio.. :p I on atmosphere air.. :D

"2. Less expansion, so tyre remain soft or original pressure after long distance drive in a hot day, that's why its quieter as claimed my Lee."

Finally I know why it's more quiet. Thanks for the explanation dude.

I used to use N2 on my tyres. But after feeling no drastic difference and with added inconvenience of going to N2 tyre outlets, I gave up and don't miss it at all.

Got difference... wallet less loose change lor.. :D

So change life style, cut N2 and gain me few packs of ciggy.. :p

I use nitrogen on all my tyres. Benefits are there but not significant as used in racing car or airplane. What do you expect? Your ride is your everyday road car. You don't use it for track racing. Lower your expectations of thinking your car is a race car and you'll learn to accept it's benefits.

As for me, I just need to refill every month. It saves me the time having to constantly check the tyre and refill air every week. If there is drop in tyre pressure, you can feel it. I know i feel it. First time fill-up for all 4 tyres is RM20, refill only RM4. Thats RM0.13 per day. What? Expensive ka?

Sikit sikit jadi bukit bang!..

RM0.13/day if u can find 10 items, it will make RM500 a year.. that's price of 2 new tyres.. :p

I only pump (normal air) my RFT tyres once after collecting my E90 last Christmas. Been using until now, never check pressure or refill for the past 6 months. Of course, my tyres are mostly town short distance ride la.. :p
