Beemer, let me point out some misconceptions;- 1) Indonesia and Thailand have been attracting more FDI than Malaysia post 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Similarly, other countries than took the IMF prescription has done better than Malaysia, South Korea as well. Mahathir's capital control policy has caused many investors to shy away from Malaysia. This is a fact. 2) Do we really have one of the biggest income population in the world? Middle income earners are defined those having combined household income from RM1200 to RM3499. Malaysia's per capita income in 2008 is estimated to be around USD 15,300 =RM 52000 (based on 3.4 exchange rate). However, government statistics have shown that about 90% of the population's household income is around RM3000 (yes, 90% are middle income and below). Realistically let me ask you this, if you have a family with 2 kids, and your combined household income is RM3000, won't you be struggling to make ends meet with house and car loan and school going children. Is that middle income group for you? This is the inconvenient truth. 3) Now about Education. No doubt under Mahathir, we produced more graduates than ever. But Malaysia also produced a lot of unemployable graduates, which subsequently the government came out with this Graduate Retraining Scheme. Do you know how much it has cost the Rakyat? Officially, more than RM 1.4 billion has been spent to retrain fresh graduates. How do unemployable graduates contribute to the country's growth, let alone the billions spent on them to retrain them??!! Again, this is a fact. 4) Mahathir was lucky that when he took over the government, everything was in place. Education system, Judiciary, Rakyat was in harmony and so forth. The same can't be said now for PM Najib, even though I think he is a capable and likable person. I don't think there is any need for me to elaborate the korek korek korek incident which till today has tainted the judiciary, the MAS RM8 share buy back, the MISC bailout and etc. And yes Proton and APs were his creations as well. Whether he has done more good or bad for the country, I am afraid the jury is out on this. Cheers
