Hello Everyone, I'm Ravi and currently drive a S320. A number of my friends have BMWs but have always been partial to the Merc. Just moved to Wangsa Ukay from TTDI since the wife and kids school in this area. I'm in the education business myself. Came across the BMW Club by chance, searching for some advice on a 728i that I saw recently at a used car lot. Read a number of the forums here and was impressed with the candid remarks and honest opinions. I hope to find some support in the event I decide to buy the 728i and also hope that I can share my experience in the forums that may help others who own a similar car.

Looking to buy BMW 728i 2000

Mirzan..got my intro done at the newbie spot. Any advice on what to look out for in a 2000 728i? As mentioned earlier, it comes with navigation but it has a UK map CD. The digital console is also faded in a sense that the digits and characters don't lit up properly. Any advise on how I can get a local navigation and also to change the digital console. Also, it is a fully imported car from UK. Do I need to get the AP and Custom documents from the dealer? Any other advice you guys might have is appreciated.

it is a good idea to check authenticity of AP. obtain copy from seller and verify with customs. as for your technical questions, better consult current E38 owners.

Ravi, welcome to BMWCM. Do enjoy your stay here. BTW I have owed a couple of Mercedes too. Somehow my prefered drive is still the BMW. The W140 S320 is a nice luxurious car too but I find the E38 looks more attractive. The drive feel is also different. Don't jump into buying the first E38 that you see but try test driving a few to get familar with the good and bad side of this E38.

As to your pursue for an E38, I would suggest that you get a "Import Baru" car. Since you are not familar with BMW's I would think a good BMW mechanic would come in handy when checking out a used car.

Believe me, between buying a good well care car and paying a slight premium is worth more than getting a cheap lemon car. Acquiring the latter can also mean a huge repair bill in your initial ownership of a BMW.

If you owns a S320 now then the maintenance and running cost of an E38 is not any worse. I have friends who owns a W211 E280 and an E38 728i but his prefered drive is still the E38.

If in doubt, do get help here. There are many very helpful members in this forum.

Thanks guys for the inputs...sure I agree, the E38 is a much aggressive drive compared to the S320 I have. Will check out the E38 with a mechanic and definitely get advice from the members of the forum.
