No, it is not true. I have seen more than 10 cars, like E46, E39 and M3 done with the retrofit.All can start the car.It is plug and play. The Multi Function of the steering still work as well.For E46, you may have to shift the AC controller down one step.For E39, most people shift the multifunction module to the glove compartment.
