Its basically to stop the o-rings from slipping out when you push it into place. The lube will make the oring stay in place, if not the o-ring will slip out of its place and would result in a bad fit. Obviously this will create a leak. If you do try this then make sure the orings are in place. If you can take a picture of the hose I will get some pics of the same hose I removed and take some pics to show you how the orings should be.EDIT: thought I will go and be proactive. Dug up one of the hoses I replaced and took a few pics for you to show what I meant.
