Vehicle registration number plate 'TAY 1' issued by the Terengganu Road Transport Department (RTD) created history when it was bought for RM220,000, the highest paid in Malaysia so far.Terengganu RTD director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said the price exceeded the RM200,090 paid for 'TAN 1', which held the previous record."Six individuals put in bids for the number since we opened the tender for TAY number plates beginning Feb 2-22."The highest bid for TAY 1 was RM220,000, followed by TAY 8 at RM62,000," he said at a news conference here today which was also attended by RTD director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan. He however declined to reveal the identity of the buyer.According to him before the tender closed the Terengganu RTD received 1,119 bids from 534 bidders for 'TAY' number plates.Besides 'TAY 1' and 'TAN 1' the registration plate 'TAX 1' issued by the state RTD also registered a high price, that of RM165,000.-- BERNAMA

RM120,000 for WKL1

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28:

A businessman paid RM120,000 to the Road Transport Department (RTD) to have that car registration number. He is just one of the many motorists who are paying a lot of money for single-digit or auspicious numbers.

Selling registration numbers is big business for the RTD these days.

In Kuala Lumpur alone, the department is expected to earn RM30 million from the sale of car registration numbers this year, up from RM26 million last year and RM20 million in 2002.

The Federal Territory (FT) RTD, which is the busiest in the country, registers about 700 vehicles a day.

Its director, Anuar Mohd Sharif (picture), said registration of numbers had become the second biggest source of income for the RTD in Kuala Lumpur — second only to collections derived from road tax.

He said that the numbers can be procured either through a tender or by buying them straight over the counter.

The numbers are divided into three categories, namely golden numbers, attractive numbers and popular numbers.

Golden numbers are numbers ranging from 1 to 10. They sell for a minimum of RM2,000.

The number "1" generally sells for about RM70,000 to RM90,000.

Number "2" and "3" sell for about RM30,000.

The number "4" is the least sought after single digit number among buyers and sells for RM8,000.

The other numbers, all the way to 10 cost about RM20,000 each.

The second category of numbers, known as "attractive" numbers are numbers from 11 to 19 as well as repetitive number such as 66, 777, and 888. These sell for at least RM800.

The third category of numbers are known as "popular" numbers.

They include even numbers like 1000 and those that come in pairs, such as 1551 and 2002. These numbers can be obtained for just RM200.

It is not just the numbers that affect the rate for a golden number.

Even the letters in the registration series have a profound effect on its price.

For example, WMC1 was sold for RM50,000, lower than the usual amount for the first number in a series.

The reason: the letter C which in Hokkien sounds like "death" put off many buyers.

There is a misconception among the public that golden numbers are reserved for members of the royal family.

Anuar said that corporate figures are the ones snapping up these choice numbers.

He said: "Nowadays, it isn’t just the Chinese who are interested in these numbers. The other races are equally eager to own attractive numbers for their cars as well."

The numbers game isn’t just played in the Federal Territory.

Even in Terengganu, the first number in the series is much sought after.

Some years ago, the number TV1 was sold by the Terengganu RTD for RM70,000, while the number TV2 was sold for RM60,000.

"We can get up to RM70,000 for the first number in the series, although our latest tender was a bit disappointing," said its director, Abd Ghani Che Kassim.

The number TAH1 was auctioned off by the Terengganu RTD recently and bought by a Datuk. The price? A mere RM14,300.

From what I've heard from a reliable source, the highest accepted bid ever was for one of the BBB8* plates back in the 80s, and the highest bid which was not accepted is for JJJ1. Both bids went into the millions, the only reason the bid for JJJ1 wasn't accepted is because it was booked by someone from the Johor royal family.

Then again, the above is only insider news, I can't find anything to prove the mentioned claims:cool:

M8 - 7 series
BAB1 - Honda S2000
MAT1 - CRV
PAG1 - C class
PAP4 - 6 Series
MAM4 - Honda City
KAT1 - Lexus

You were saying the Attractive number plates as in 66, 777, 888 sell for at least RM800? I have the most recent Wilayah list here, 444 is going for Rm3,800, 555 Rm8,800, 888, Rm15,500.. maybe u mean Rm800 is the minimal. no? numbers 2 and 3 can sell between 25k - 48k. so its going up.. I mean PH 7 is going for Rm88,000 even a number plate like W** 1188 is Rm4,500.. Just sharing la..
