[QUOTE="funfer_fahrer, post: 189292, member: 2733"] K.M, I believe nowadays nobody wants to talk about 1969, let alone to remind others about it. But, once a while it is good to remind others of what actually happened just to cross check the direction of this nation. May 13 1969 incident has got nothing to do with economic disparity. It was more than that. When DAP won a number of seats during the election, the supporters went parading around K.L with banners and slogans, and to mention the broom - as a symbol to sweep away the Bumis from the city and into the jungle. In a way, DAP was attempting ethnic cleansing. There were political unrest in Bangsar, Setapak and downtown K.L. Coupled with a weak PM who was only interested in playing mahjong and gambling, there was a perfect recipe for disaster. Businesses could not grow. The whole nation was in the state of emergency. At one point, leaders from various races "...could not even afford to face each other". The issue had to be scaled down from "ethnic cleansing" to "economic disparity". Only then, the reconciliation process could start. It was very shameful especially in that particular year a man named Neil Armstrong first landed on the moon but our nation was going backwards. At last, all the parties agreed that NEP was the answer even though the programme was actually under-compensated in nature, taking into account that the Bumis in K.L were intentionally going to be "swept" into the jungle (not even into the kampung) . Having said this, it was such a small price to pay in order for others to live comfortably. Because of this, the mid 70s was such a pleasant era to live. Also, because of this the older generation were more tolerant because they understand the real issue and they believe it is not worth going through it for the second time. Of course, not everybody in K.L when it happened were bad people. There were stories of good samaritans that involved Malays helping the Chinese and vice versa during the emergency.
