It finally happened, my M50B20 finally died. After spending a small fortune on a complete gearbox overhaul, the engine decided to call it a day and has died. The engine oil is now white sludge which probably indicates that the head gasket is gone. I can't say that this was unexpected as I have had numerous issues with this engine in the past. Can read about the rest of the story in the links below:http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25801http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26706http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27085I have put up my recently refurbished gearbox for sale. Details in the link below:http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29045Now currently considering either a complete swap to M50B25 or 1JZ. Either way should have more items up for sale when the work gets underway.Anyway have anything they need from an M50B20 please let me know and I will see if it can be removed from the engine. Please PM me if you need anything.Very, very sad as I didn't want to spend all this money..........

shyful, I'm actually considering 1J more for reliability also. Dunno man, still thinking.

hi bro....i understand the situation that u are facing to either rebuild it to standard form or to upgrade a lil or rebuild it to the max,how far will the next rebuild lasts you.....how much could u gain from the thousands of $$$ spent......all those worrying thoughts.......about rebuilding or replacing the engine......:D

here's a lil reading material for your knowledge if the 1jz seriuosly interests you......no bad intentions......just want to help out.......cos i know when all the thoughts are playing in the mind.....

jo-e34, i actually ran an e30 with a RB20DET before which was much more reliable than the M20. The attractive thing about the 1J is that it is so much cheaper than the M50B25.

Just wondering if the 1J has given any issues. (Likely to be a lot less, I suppose).

true....i'd say in the 2.5 category region it would be the most outstanding of them all in terms of price / hp gain.....but dont forget the point even though the half cut is much cheaper but the workmanship is a lil on the high side.....for these kind of swap......
so on and all the $$$ spent is pretty much.....the same

you'll be looking at close to 10k range for all the swap that u intend to do......
so its still back to the same thing......do you want something for a change or stay the same.......your choice......:D

mizhan. Would love a V8 but the road tax would kill me. :)

Based on what I have read I get the impression the 1J's are more reliable as compared with the M50's. Have had so many issues with mine that the money spent repairing it could have bought another E34.

Just trying to get some info to make a better decision.

Thanks for all the input.

for all my cars, i spend $$ more than the price i paid for them. That is called BMW 2nd hand ownership.

Seech...just now I got quoted from mech...to plonk 2jz..3.0l have to spend 10k..the engine only cost 5k,another 5k for upah pasang + part replacement for wear & tear..now he's about to finish a conversion..a 2jz with 75k mileage on it!! hp? according to him 340 standard!! Later he told me that the engine can last long if we use it with manner...replacement parts are abundant...I believe him coz he is an official mechanic for Petronas Adventure Team...(Ah Kai if anyone familiar..)
I know it hard for you to make decision....either way, I'll support you bro...

seech...buy my car. then sell the s/charger. i'll fix u up for a 450hp 600nm daily driving pussycat. no need to go the jap route. all electronics in the car will still work, no need curi ayam :) hehee....racun racun.

Thanks for the offer bro but since already spending $$$, thought of M50B25 or 1JZ.

maintainence? its the same as a M50B20. what's the diffrence? u will spend the same amount of $$$ to repair the same things. only there'll be a little extra for the s/charger, which is like every 60000kms :) engine wise, we still use the same parts. dont be scared...hehe
