hi ICE gurus!I was looking at a really cheap JVC set in Brothers going for about RM375 ... how does JVC fair when it comes to reliability in service and durability :DAlso what is the most basic system to get for a barely decent car stereo incl. the 4 speakers too. My budget is 1k.thanks.

For a bit more $$$, you might wanna check out the JVC KD-G725 and KD-G825, both have USB port in front to plug in your thumbdrive... the KD-G825 has a customisable display... can even put in a short video as an opening/power-up scene... maybe Shakira doing her boogie, if that fancies you... of course the KD-G825 is also better off in other department: a more flexible sound tuning option for better sound customisation. The KD-G825 is the cheapest "branded" HU around with such display capabilities.

As for reliability, can't say much, haven't used any JVC HU yet.

Japan Victor Company is famous brand. Never fail me except for my Camcoder. My JVC TV when I study (1994) have sensor that detect environment light, it will reduce contrast accordingly.Brilliant !

1k budget, Brother's sell a lot "Component set" from Kenwood ,JVC .......

Maybe a bit more than 1K I think .

most important is what colour do you want the HU be in?

for e30 era, BLACK is the only one.....so NAKAMICHI is one good choice.

Ludavic,

Some ol Nakamichi HUs in black with amber background mite just do the trick. I had an ol MB100 in my E36 until I switched to Eclipse a while back. On another note, the JVC brand is IMO one of the most reliable Japanese brands out there though they do not seem to be very aggressive in their M & P aspect of their biz here in M'sia.

Regards,
VaN.

"JVC is reliable"... wow, that is good to hear... I actually almost bought one already, for my other car, but decided to hold off till next year's models (whatever those may be)... wanna concentrate on setting up the ICE on my E36 first.

Speaking of reliability, my other car is now having the super basic cheapo Pioneer DEH-1450 swapped from the E36... this is a year 2002 bottom-of-the-line HU from Pioneer, and surprisingly it has been very reliable, and never skipped a bit (yet), even on my Satria's super stiff coilovers... tuner reception is better too, comparing with my Alpine CDA-9833 when it was in my Satria.

For those looking for a basic HU, reliable and with reasonable basic sound quality, I think it's always good to stick to long established brands that can offer HU at "cheap and good" pricing, eg., Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, etc...
