Joji Nagashima.Japanese designer born in Tokyo and educated in Japan and at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan (graduated 1980) - a university where Robert Kearns, an engineering professor at Wayne, *invented* the first intermittent car windshield wipers (in 1964) - an educational institution traditionally connected with the auto industry and the Detroit Auto Shows.Since 1988 Joji Nagashima has been with BMW, he is now based in Munich; a modest man and a brilliant designer, Nagashima designed BMW E36/7* Z3,*the E39 5 series and E90/E91 3 series; Nagashima*has 22 international patents with BMW for the car body design; his designs were classic at the moment of their creation, E39 5 series designed by Nagashima under Rietzle will remain one of the most beautiful BMW's ever created.Quote from http://www.bmwism.com/bmws_designers.htm

Neither is Chris Bangle, who is responsible for the lines of the E60 and E65.

Bangle was the first American to be Chief of Design at BMW and, when he retired, was replaced by anonther non-German, Adrian von Hooydonk (who is Dutch)

Well frankly, since when German's were known for their artistic capabilities? :p

Well, Germans are known to be conservative .
I don't know how Chris Bangle ends up there knowing how bad American cars were, as evident in some of CB's design. Some of his lines are just unresolved and of strange proportion . But he did introduce certain design cues, as usual followed and resolved by other manufacturers . Glad to see the back of him

Germany have been the leader in modern industrial design since before WW2, read about the history of Bauhaus.
The Laica camera, Braun electrical appliances...these products is heavily influence by the Bauhaus movement.
When you talk about modern european design, you are talking about Bauhaus.
These trends then inspire people like Steve Job and Jony Ivy which design the apple products......
Do read about it, the stereotype that you believe about Germany is simply untrue.
