Hi Guys,I just bought a second hand 318i (e46) year 2001, clocked at 151,000. I'm yet to send my car for a service as what my car agent said is that I can bring the car after 5000km drive. Now, after use it for few days. I found the following problem arise in the car:1. GearBoxI find it's a little hard to transmit the gear from P to D,N and R and recently i can hear a weird "dak-dak" sound from the GB (when i hit the brake and driving).2. Sound from the BeltI can hear unwanted sound from the front part. As of my car agent's advice, he said it is due to the new belts installed and the sound may decrease gradually after the engine gets hit. But i feel it's abit suspicious whether that's the real reason.3. Driving not very stable at top speedWhy i can feel like the car is not stable when i drive above 110kmph? Is it due to the tyre or alignment problem? As of now, these are the problems arise and i'm hoping to get a very good response from the experts here. Thanks

IMO,

1. Could be the gearbox itself or rear axle
2. Normal for 318, not sure about your tolerance then
3. Check your tyre or suspension

send it to BMW speacilist, don't crack your head guessing and worrying, then get a 2nd opinion if the repair is expensive or you have doubt

1) either change gearbox oil/filter or check gearbox mounting.
2) The M43 engine only runs on 1 belt. So, it's either the belt tensioner or the belt is wearing off. it's not normal.
3) yes, check your tires, yr alignment, your bushing and your suspension.

It is advisable to have the car to be checked out (Inspection 1) by a BMW specialist ASAP.

it look like the previous owner may have not taken good care of the car.

Rather than speculate and keep worrying, why not send it to a specialist to have it checked out? Would give you peace of mind. I know how driving a car that you do not have 100% confidence in would always affect your joy in driving it. And, really, that defeats the purpose of "Sheer Driving Pleasure" then

Thanks to all of guys for the guide.

I'll bring it to nearby bmw specialist centre. Any suggestion in the Klang Valley area and is there any chargers applied for inspection?

cheers!

I sent back the car to my agent as it shows some leakage problem:

1. Engine Cooler leaking, this could damage the gearbox.
2. Engine Oil leaking (hidden)
3. Vaacum (Noise)

Hope I can get my machine in good condition.
