hey guys, anyone knows what is the actual jatco designated model code for the A5S300J auto box from the japanese version e34/e36/e32. is it the same as the RE5R01A 5 speed box made by Jatco?? appreciate any feedbacks. CHEERS

The 528 got three different transmissions

A5S310Z, is a ZF's 5HP18,
A5S310R, is a 4LE30 by GM and
A5S300J, is a transmission of unknown model by Japan Transmission Co. (JATCO)

is this info help..?

thanks for the effort. but i guess it still clearly state it as a "UNKNOWN" model from Jatco. ..

I have the same gearbox, it's a pain having such a rare gearbox instead of the ZF/GM ones. They specify a rare fluid (Apollo ATF D-3) for transmission fluid. If you can read Japanese, google 'A5S300J', there are some people who have written about it but it's all in Japanese. I need a translator.

apollo DIII

apollo is actually the brand of the atf and DIII is the specification.

Yeah I know. I've been thinking about just trying any DIII transmission fluid. But the Service manual actually says DO NOT use any other oil other than Apollo ATF DIII, which makes me kind of scared to use anything else - don't want to kill the transmission.

Have you changed the fluid in yours?

Currently using petronas ATF DIII. you need about 8litres. GOOD stuff. so far the only dexron III with G rating that i have come across. all the others like shell, caltex and esso that i found were still selling some old stock with DII C/E rating or lower DIII rating.

just change them about two weeks back. used shell for my last flush around march but tempted to change it when i jack up the car to locate the model number for the gearbox and two bottles of Petronas DIII in hand. the previous oil was shell ATF III/mercon and was last change in march but i can tell that the petronas atf was much better due to the smoother shift. no regret changing it.

Hi! guys, I have just joined the forum after founding out that the club has more helpful information then the others.
I have bmw 1995 525i E34 with the Japanese tranny (jatco A5S300J) and have been trying to get information about the transmission ATF change.
As you all know that the tranny is a rare one and has all the plugs on the pan making it very had to re-fill it.
"Leforte" you have mentioned that you done your ATF change and used DIII. I need help on the following areas:-
-- How many Litres does the tranny makes. (You have mentioned 8L, but I saw 4L on the following Japanese site: http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?i...tbnw=108&prev=/images?q=jatco+corp&um=1&hl=en

-- When I drained the tranny, only about 3 or 4Litres came out. Is this correct or there is something that I am wrong

-- How do you re-fill the transmission with the fill hole on facing downwards. Please make me through the whole procedure from start to end.

-- And how do I check if the transmission is full with 8Litres

the tranny takes about 7-8 litres

the tranny oil pan holds about 4 litres of fluid, the remainder of it is stuck in the torque converter, for a complete oil change, you will have to remove the torque converter unit to drain the fluid. there will be some fluid stuck in the transmission oil cooler too, just unbolt and drain the unit.

with your car raised. you fill the tranny using a hand held hydraulic pump. fill it until it starts to drip from the hole. start the engine and cycle through p-r-n-d-4-3-2-1 and off the engine, this will run the fluid through its internal and into the torque converter. continue filling until it starts to drip again. plugged the filling hole, start the engine and clcye through the gears again and let it idle to its operating temperature. open the fill hole and continue filling til its full.

-- And how do I check if the transmission is full with 8Litres
keeping track of the number of bottles used would be a good start.

leforte, do you change the ATF filter also? Any noise with ATF filter from spare parts shop? Refer to my posting regarding a friend's E39 ATF change experience.

Apollo is a brand name of Idemitsu. I contacted Idemitsu some years ago about it and its ATF came in a 20L container or something like that. Mine is currently running on Caltex. Will check out Petronas or Redline in the future.

there is only genuine jatco on sale around here, anyway the jatco atf filter is a metal mesh construction, its much sturdier in construction than the fake filtrane unit. no sound or issues with it. recommended to be change at the same time.

your friend's atf change issue is well known. the main caused of noise with the fake filtrane filter is usually the o-ring on the filter that connects with the valvebody, the o-ring is often defective and that leaves a gap for atf to go through and causes a whining sound. sometimes the fake filter element is terribly restricted as well so when the pressure is too high the atf is then suck through the o-ring gap instead , my e39's 5hp18 had that issue when my previous mech installed a fake filter in it.

I did another fluid change yesterday with Dex II-D and pumped about 5L, and all was ok until today I got one "Trans Program" message with a "plus" sign just before I started the car. What does is mean?
