Hi. Looks like my '81 735i has the L-Jetronic engine (must be very early 1981 model)http://www.flickr.com/photos/84839048@N07/8184858220/in/photostreamWhile going through all the rubber hoses and changing the perished ones, I found out that one of the stub (arrow in picture) for the cold start is broken.http://www.flickr.com/photos/84839048@N07/8184820415/in/photostream/and here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/84839048@N07/8184858264/in/photostream/So my ques: Is it ok to bypass the cold start valve (and seal off the water holes)? Its impossible for me to get a replacement CSV. Thanks for any help.Syed0125205525

woahhh....this CSV setup looks purely mechanical as opposed to my previous e30,also an L jet, which had an elect vlv located at the inlet manifold.A CSV is just that.it assists starting on cold days.it is like a choke from cars of yesteryears where it needs to be pulled.but on yours it is auto and is controlled by water temp.
we don't actually need this and it's ok to have this bypassed.but you may have to mod the valve to 'permanent close' becoz i am guessing that the valve provides an additional fuel supply thru a valve with engine cold and closes up gradually as the engine heats up.if you leave the vlv open by bypassing the sensing of water temp, then the engine may run rich all the time.

good luck

"Choke" is as what it's suggest.. it shuts the air inlet and enrich the air-fuel mix. To bypass it, need to understand how it works coz u don't want to run a car with permanently shut air inlet, is allow it permanently open, you will have cold idling engine mati issue.

Found out from bimmerforums.com thats not a cold-start valve, thats for heating the throttle body to keep it from feezing in extreme cold weather. Hmmm...

if that's the case you can totally bypass it.no chance of that(cold weather)happening here....

bypassed it on my previous e30 and contemplating to do the same on my e39.less coolant leak avenues.....
