Hi Folks,A few weeks after changing two power steering hoses, bellows and of course PStr oil, a humming sound began to develop when turning. There is no loss of oil or any visible leakage. This type of sound happened in my alfa when powersteering oil was below min level. What can be the cause in this 523?. Any body had any experience before. I would like to have some idea before going to mechanic and I hope its not the steering rack...$$$$

Had this problem before on my E34. Found out it was the high pressure power steering hose that was causing it. had it replace and the humming went away. Bloody hose is damn exp tho.

Did you replace the high pressure hose recently? Was it a secondhand hose or repaired hose? I asked coz I know an improperly repaired or 2nd hose can give out this humming noise.

Am still having this problem even after checking the hoses and changing the steering rack 2 x weeks back. Surprisingly the sound appears when I turn the wheel to the right only and none on the left side.
Initially for some reason thought it was the tyres on the right side, checked everything - negative. But my tyres were due for change so got them changed anyway yesterday. Hoped miraculously the sound would go away but fly kite.
Am still troubleshooting. Bringing back to the mech tomorrow to have another go...

Any suggestion from other mensas?

I change 2 hoses, to the cooler and to the pump. I suspect the system was not properly purged. Air still trapped. I think got to go back to the Kayu Ara ws again. But now got to go to Genting. Hopefully its ok.

Problem solved after changing the Power Steering Pump. Mechanic showed that it was rough running every time steering is turned. No choice before the problem moved to steering rack.

Damage done to my pocket RM1.3k part only. Labour extra.

wmd82,

Was the sound on your car heard when you turn the steering to left and right or only one sided?
Am checking on this as my power steering pump was changed last dec and steering rack this month yet the sound still there.

it's your pump.. the M50,M52 always like that..
Pussy bro,

So it OK to live it or it will be damaging over time? Any serious consequences???

The sound was heard any way I turned the steering, except if not mistaken left turn was louder. The sound got louder everyday even when taking turn at slower speed.

it's not okay to live with it, since the belt that's connect to it also drives the alternater and the water pump, once the bearing/pump jams up, the belt will snap, your fan blade with break hitting the radiator, hoses, etc, at 4000rpm ? then you will be having a bigger bill on your side instead of just a pump..

Bro,

An ignorant question?
Does a power steering pump changed 5 months ago can fail that soon? Spent RM1200+ last Dec and the sound has been there since Feb probably carried over from previous owner. Been driving since then but the sound never got louder but stayed same till todate.
