I own a HP Probook 5310m and recently installed 4GB of ram but windows says only 2.7GB of usable ram but BIOS register 4GBAnyone knows how to tweak the notebook so it can register a little more ram?? Now I am not sure 0.7GB of ram is worth the upgrade. Hope someone here can help...I read many forums, really disturbing to read what the geniuses has written... super high ego and never get to the point plus they expect everyone to be as smart as them. Many thanks in advance.

I m no computer geek myself, but i believe the ram was taken by video addressable area, or any other memory mapped devices. Have you tried enabling the memory remap function in the bios? that should do it, at least it does for me!

Anyway why did u even need the Windows 7 to run on 3.5GB?Do you have any 'memory eating application' running on your PC? i have mine running at 2GB without any problem. Just wondering though.

Mine when go to My Computer properties, it says, Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (2.99 GB usable)

When go to task manager, it says:

Available: 1848 MB
Cached: 1099 MB
Total: 3059 MB
Installed: 4096 MB

What's yours?

If BIOS registered, then you should be good. Are u referring to the usable memory? Mine is 2.99MB/4GB, 1037 MB reserved for hardware.

32 bit windows is only capable of registering 3.2gb of ram, regardless you have 4gb or more. your laptop might use some of the memory available for graphics purposes. that is why you only have 2.7+/- gb

my 2 cents though

Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (2.75 GB usable)

When go to task manager, it says:

Available: 1711 MB
Cached: 1035 MB
Total: 2746 MB
Installed: 4096 MB

If BIOS registered, then you should be good. Are u referring to the usable memory? Mine is 2.99MB/4GB, 1037 MB reserved for hardware.

Lozo and Azel.. I do believe the in-build VGA does take up some of the ram but shouldnt be so much.

My notebook start to lag when am running basic photo editing or opening > 4 IE windows/tabs

lozo is right. Win 32bit can only use up to 3.5GB RAM. So if you have 4GB RAM installed and it only shows up as 2.7GB, then probably some of the RAM (from 2.7GB to 3.5GB portion) is being allocated to some hardware. For laptops, that is usually the onboard graphics which required the RAM. It may be possible to recover some of it via your BIOS, but that may mean poorer graphics performance (or not, depending on what you use the laptop for).

If I am not mistaken u need the 64bit version to utilize those RAMs above 3.5GB

I checked my colleague's PC Win7 Pro 32bit on 2GB RAM, his Hardware allocation only 171MB and 2.00GB(1.87GB usable) .. *&^%$#@!!

You can't run more than 3.2gb of ram on a 32-bit OS. Just change to 64-bit la. Your 32-bit programs will run fine under 64-bit environment unless it's some really really old program.

Also if you purchased the Window7 pack you should have the 32-bit and 64-bit cds.

I cant find any Win7Pro 64bit CD in the box.. Only a recovery CD and some drivers CDs .... Should I bring it to HP Service Center?

Oh yours came with the laptop....don't think you'll get the 64-bit cd then.
