Hey all,Got another catechize. How the heck am i goin to decipher between d uk,s'pore or jap spec car beside wats on the paper??any pointers?thanx again.

Normally the vin number will only tell you something about your
car...

Date of manufacturer,
Country of manufacturer
Left or right hand drive
Engine type
Auto or manual

As for Jap or UK, please refer to your AP...

Here's a crude method of telling which is which:

Jap cars have smaller and squarer number plate receptacles with the various stickers in the engine, body and doors etc in Japanese. Some Jap cars, I believe, have a small "JPN" marking on the speedo (I saw this on a Jap-spec X5). Jap cars's radios can only tune up to 90kHz. Jap cars use metric units for the speedo, odo and on-board computer.

UK cars use imperial units for the speedo, odo and on-board computer and, where applicable, for the various stickers found in the engine bay and perhaps for the tyre pressure sticker pasted on the driver's side B-pillar. You might also find some rotting fish and chips in the glovebox - just kidding!

Singapore cars use metric units for the speedo, odo and on-board computer.

:D One more J-spec have speed cut at 180km/hr.
Ok la dah laju pun & kalau sangat pun banyak pulak surat jemputan PDRM :yahoo:

The speedo of the Jap-spec X5 I saw read all the way to 250km/h.
Speedo reading? Not sure what you mean bro, cos on mine, the display shows up to 260km/h. But, speed is still cut off at 180. If there's a down-hill road or some wind assistance, i can touch 200. But it'll eventually level off at 180. Real pity. My suggestion is not to buy Jap spec cars. They require higher octane fuels, have stricter emmisions rules ( with resulting poorer power output), and use a crappy auto-box. The one in mine is not the highly touted ZF type or the GM one. Well placed sources say its the same 5 speeder used in Nissans. The only thing to be proud about is the build quality and the fact that used units from Japan tend to be well maintained. Check with dealer or have a look at the car interior and engine bay. There will be the tell-tale Japanese stickers. Or get AB guys or franchise dealers to enter chassis number into their computers...the spare parts shop i patronise (in Spore) can tell my car make, model and year, plus country of origin with the click of a button.

Ciao.

I mean that the display I saw on the X5 speedo was up to 250km/h (or was it 260km/h? I can't remember exactly but never mind, the point is, it was beyond 180km/h).

I was told by M1 that the gearbox ECU for Jap-spec cars are different from UK and local BMWs and cannot be read by diagnostic machines which can read UK and local BMWs' gearbox ECU. M1 said the Jap-spec ECU is more compact and more reliable!
