Car couldnt start this evening, did all the necessary trouble shooting with the help of T2...but still could not start. Suspect battery could be the culprit, called AAM, battery is ok...but the mechanic noticed on the meter cluster the gear indicator is at 'D' eventhough the lever is at 'P'....even shifting the lever up and down the indicator maintained at 'D'...so Im suspecting bcos of this, the car wont start. Anybody encountered this problem before.....

happened to my father's e39 b4..my mech said the sensor for engine oil kaput, it tells the computer that there is no engine oil in there so as safety it locks the car on D(i think so)..situated aroud/near the oilsump..not sure tho bout that..but change it and it starts without hassle..goodluck.

change car lar to M5.. Dont waste time on that old junk. (Hijack T2 518 car for quick solution)

shift cable at gearbox loose at the bottom.... that's why the P and D indicator shows..

...and how do i rectify that?

Just jack up the car on the passenger side so that you crawl under it. Put a spare wheel under the wheel (just in case that the jack failed)

Get a torch and look a lever that have a small cable on the gearbox. You might have to remove some insulation aluminum shield to see the lever.

Try moving the lever and see the display on the gearshift. Move the lever until it show "P" again. Retighten the bolt/locknut.
