Hi guys, got a bit of a noob question here. I've got a m20b25 converted e30 currently running on a getrag 240 box. This box is currently about to bite the dust. I was wondering if the getrag 260 is a direct bolt on to my current setup. I'm pretty sure the bell housing will fit but am not too sure about the gear lever and long shaft.Anyone with experience doing the swap with advice to give?Boon

hey boon, long time no see

if i'm not wrong the long shaft is a different length

what happened to your 240?

hey man....

hate to admit it, but I've been away from the forums for awhile.

my 240 is leaking badly and feels like I've lost 1st and 2nd is about to go. think the root cause is between the seat and steering wheel : )

I'm ok if the long shaft is a different length....just wondering if this problem can be overcome by creative means

Maybe better to save hassle and just get the 240 rebuilt? At least then you know you'll have good internals rather than getting another used box of unknown condition inside.

yeah that's one option.

I've read that the ratios of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears of the 260 are more suited for the 2.5 (correct me if I'm wrong). That and I've also driven an e30 325 with a 260. personal preference lah, but I like it.

The other thing is that its also believed to be a sturdier box. again, correct me if I'm mistaken.

You're right. You'll just lunch the 240 with a 2.5 engine. The 260 is better for higher torque applications.

thanks man.

still not too sure on the extra parts list for the swap though. any thoughts?

The 260 bolts in fine, but you'll have to change the longshaft and differential to match. What ratio differential are you using now?

gah...that's not what I was hoping to hear....seems like a 325 longshaft is hard to come by.

I'm using a 3.45

Note that on a original specced 325 post 1986, the diff ratios offered were 3.64, 3.73, 3.91, 4.10.

I suppose you can still use the 3.46, pickup won't be so great but highway cruising will be nice. However if your budget allows, put in a higher ratio LSD and see your world change.. :)

The G260 box also has a slight tilt, so make sure you get the correct linkages with the box as sellers sometimes sell without the linkages.

so the diff is more of a drivability issue rather than a physical fit issue?

i.e. if I'm able to source for the linkage and a 325 longshaft, its all systems go.

Yes and Yes again... :top:

Unless you change the diff to a bigger casing type, but that's another story...
