Was driving on highway last week. My e46 can normally cruise to 180km/h with little efforts. but, after 1/2 hrs of driving, notice that it struggled to past 160km/h. changed to manual to drop gear, and stil can hardly past 160km/h. it went back normal after 10-20 minutes. i was relieved, until after 1 hour drive after that, when stopping at toll booth, car was smoking underneath, followed by radiator warning sign. stop the car, noticed that expansion tank broken, coolant all poured out, causing the smoke. towed the car and get the tank replaced. then it started, when i took the car back from workshop, i noticed that when i slow down for traffic light, for example, car will jerk (more of feeling like being hit from the back) whenever it drops to 2nd and 1st gear. send back to workshop, couldnt pinpoint the problem, suggested to change the 3 bushes around the differential (has been discussed in other thread on the causal for 'thud' sound). changed it, problem not solved. checked gearbox oil, found that it is a bit dirty (i changed it last year). i suspected that gearbox oil could have been overheated, n thus lost it lubricating property, causing the sound. or worst, gearbox is damaged. i m going to try to change the gbox oil first (as it is cheaper than gbox rebuild), and if it doesnt solve it, need to rebuild the gbox anyway (quoted 6-8k for rebuild and installation, all in). anyone has any similar experience to share? found almost similar symptoms, but it is on e60 http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/newforums/index.php?/topic/18898-e60-jerk/?hl=gear%20jerk, I am not sure whether the info there could help, as some had it solved simply by resetting adaption (e46 has such things too? I dont think so)
