I've had this message on the loaner 316i when I sent my 520d in for some works. I can tell you with certainty that the cause is due to the car, for no apparent reason, left idle overnight or cooled, suddenly having had a faint whirring sound, like a blowing fan. I discovered it when I was in my car porch one morning, heard it and traced it back to the engine bay area near the wipers. Immediately after that episode, the car started with the error message. I think it's related to the air recirculation mode settings in he car. When I set it to M or manual, I get that whirring sound but at A or automatic, so far it's OK. So, maybe the system was simply sucking fresh air into the cabin. Try this and see if the error repeats but I'm damn sure the discharge is caused by some fan or blower components running when engine is cold and stationary, especially left idle for some time
