Just went to AB Sg. Besi to test-drive both the 523i and 520d for the second time today after booking a 520d last month. However I must say that the test-drive today was done without any prejudice. I sort of "reset" my mind before stepping into the showroom. This time, I spent a little more time on listening to the engine noise of 520d as well. Here's a short note of what I found out this round: 523i No doubt the 6-potter is smooth as silk. But my butt dyno tells me that it lacks the "omph" factor in the torque department. It doesn't give me any surprise, just performs as the way it should. 520d The instant I step on the accelerator, I already feel that the torque is immensely good. The "pick-up" is so good that it gives me the feel of driving a lighter and smaller car, like a 3-series. The gear change is hardly noticeable, just like 523i. While driving, I can barely hear the engine noise except when I press hard on the accelerator. I fact, I won't even call it "noise". I don't know, maybe it's just the turbo sound? About the clatter sound heard when one is outside of the cabin, frankly, the insulation is so good that it dampens the clatter sound by a great deal. I even open the hood to listen to the clatter sound. It is not like the normal clatter sound associated with other diesel-powered cars. At least it's not like my workhorse Nissan Navara. It sounds a tad softer. In summary, today's test drive reaffirms my decision to book a 520d. (The above is solely my personally opinion)
