recently i change my exhaust tip because the original one oledi karat...after put new tips ... my exhaust sound 50% louder then before... dunno how this happen... cannot tahan the sound (3000RPM>) when accelerating...i'm not changing any major part and still using original cat system.... just the tips onlysound too loud :14: afraid it will effect the engine loorr.......is this normal? or abnormal?

Changing the tip only does not affect the resonance of the exhaust. Is this an add on type or did you have to cut and weld?

If there welding then maybe the guy didn't do a good job. Go back and visit your exhaust specialist.

this one is cut and welding... tips size: 3inc each

Where di u cut it? At the box or the pipe? Generally if at the pipe after the box, then the sound may be only slightly louder because you have increased the diameter by quite a bit.

However if the cut & welding is at the box then it's difficult to say.

agreed, i also change the tip only, no sound difference, just look nicer

cut the existing pipe sampai habis.. then weld the new pipe to the box...
but the existing hole diameter at backbox never increase still the same just weld big pipe only

Woah, luckily I came across this thread now otherwise I wouldn't have known about the potential problems.because I have wanted to change the tips for a while now, why on this top specification engined 3 series did they not bother to even give a pair of chrome tips is beyond me..cheapskates!! :) Anyway sorry to hijack your thread but I was wondering, a friend of mine who owns a E34 M5 3.8 told me that it is not advisable to change the E36 muffler to a sports muffler which is too loud or free flowing as it disrupts the back pressure to the gearbox and will cause gearbox failure in long term..and he also said that if I really want to change I should go for those which are free flowing not more than 40% from standard in order to maintain this backpressure. I feel this is a fair precaution to take considering the age of our 328's which this might actually cause a nearly "time's up" gearbox to actually fail..any comments on this?

40% backpressure

huuuyooo free flow 40% kaa??
my exhaust just remove the existing tips pipe and welded the new one (3inc x 2pcs) oledi sound like rocket... maybe 5% free flow hehehe and cannot tahan the sound... :43:
actually i want to put the tips for cosmetic purpose then it become hell loud... how come.. :stupid:

i think the original backpressure is made for comfort, go for 40% free flow become louder (not everyone like this sound), actually its good for engine to release the heat and add extra kick, not sure about the effect to gearbox, mmm... maybe cause by extra kick make the gbox life spend shorter... :smokin:

328 ori pipe have flap.. at low rpm it close part of it and at higher rpm it open full.. thats how you get good silence.

Check out the ori 328 pipe and you will understand what I mean

hi geoffrey, thanks for the info,
i see....
the flap control by vacuum host ya?
before this i got this problem, that flipping flap cannot open, just sometime its work, its start to jam because of karat very teruk lorr the worse ever.. i will upload the photo soon....

I think the flap is controlled by the ECU... So, in addition to the extra noise, I'm sure the exhaust tips also gave you an instant 100hp more... heh heh heh... kidding... :p

i think paip bocor...somewhere from the manifold till the centre part...sure between bocor

You change the T-join pipe laa...sure ok ones :)
Still don't know how to fix....ha ha ha...call plumber lor
