The E36/34 for sure came with the most commonly used EPROM of the past, the 32K, 27C256. One of these blank chips may just cost about rm10 at most and its not very difficult to find a programing device to read/write these chips. We must be very thankful to BMW to putting this chip on a removable IC socket, so no need of any expert soldering guys to yank the chip out. Then post 1996 models life isn't that easy as they came with a EEPROM 28F200 which is a 44pin surface mount PSOP which requires some soldering skill to remove and install and also a special programming adapter / tool to read and write to these.FYI most ECU's are unique unless they're off the same batch, each ECU is marked with a hardware and a software number, if you try installing a chip off one ECU into another with different HW or SW numbers in a worst case the car may not even start. That is why its always important to work of your car's original map if your planning to use the same ECU.Let me know how many of you would like to do this themselves,  as I will continue time permitting.
