Guys,For the last few days my brakes have been squealing.Normal braking while driving is ok but just at the very end before i come to a full stop i get this really loud squealing or if i'm inching along in a jam also its bad..It's driving me nuts!!! Took car to Stuttgart and the foreman there said this is normal for the e90!Is this rite???

I don't have such a problem on my E90 (hopefully not in the future!).

However a couple of months ago, I did have a similar issue on another car of mine after I changed the brake pads. There was this squealing sound as I slowed down. At first the mechanic asked me to go remachine my disc brakes (at my own expense) but I was adamant not to. I insisted that he changed a new set of brake pads for me and voila! The sound was gone :)

You might want to have your brake pads checked...

squealing or grinding?

I dropped in on my SA for similar problem. It was grinding bad at the rears. I looked at the OBC and it says 5000 miles left on the rear pads. Well the pads and rotors checked out (all within factory specs), they gave them a little clean and sent me out on my way. They said sometimes dirt gets in there and screws things up. I wasn't convinced but I trust my SA.

So I left up to NY immediately after and everything was fine except for some instances pulling up into the toll booth. I was cussin quite bad to be in that predicament as high speed driving needed ample braking. But the brakes held pretty well for the DC-NY-DC run and the squealing has not cropped up since...

bmrocket,

Mind sharing what is your milage now? I too do get a little squel at the end when coming to a stop. The brakes seems a little sticky when inching along too at times. But no loud squeling.

I did read some where that we need to do some hard braking once in a while just to clean up the pads and disc. Especially after washing your car, you will notice a rust like film forming on the disc.

the squealing is actually quite common for e60s. From what I was told, over time, an edge is created on the discs which then touches the pads first before full contact and this creates the squealing sound.

One way to get rid of the squealing is to machine the edges of the brake pads - some have tried it and it seems to work

OK guys,

The squealing (not grinding KL2DC) sound is coming from the front end. While driving i have no probs with noise or stopping power.

My mileage currently is 28k kms and the OBC tells me there is still 24k kms to front brake service and 19k kms for rear brake service (do those numbers sound rite?).

I also called the SA at AB Sg Besi and his contribution was that it may be build up of brake dust or the brake pads could be worn down. Told him the mileage n OBC info so he said could just be brake dust......

i hv ald been through these frustating periods...the sound comes and goes as it likes...so i dont give a damn anymore with this issue!! only wasted time and money on mechs advice! just ensure to to have regular checks on ur braking systems will do fine...or turn up ur stereo, hehe..

cheers mate...

I haven't experienced this squeeling, but certainly the stickyness of the brakes during stop and go traffic as Danc highlighted. Read the manual and this is a "feature" of the E90. Apparently the brakes is trying to be smart and holds a little longer even after you release the brake pedal. Hence the stickyness... But no sliding backwards of steep slopes because of this LOL.

Looks like u're rite bro..
It seems to have quieten down for now..
Just that it was so loud when it happens people actually turn n look like the car is havin an orgasm or sumtin!!!

how can the OBC actually tells how much more km to go before replacement of the disc brake pads ? nowadays cars are too smart :)

i heard this soft squealing during one rainy day down in Sentosa Island where i lots of stop-go stop-go junction and at low speed. other than that havent heard anything. only clocked 8000km now since Mar 2006.

Have experienced squealing brakes so far, but I do agree that the brakes are "sticky" especially when coming to a stop while moving at crawling speed.

Moderns Beemers comes with plenty of sensors, and one of these sensors is what tells the OBC roughly when the brake pads should be changed.

Wow... I guess you seldom use the car. 8,000km for 1 year 5 months period.
