Hello everyone, I am a new comer to this forum. My E90i SE has been giving me a crunching sound during pickup. I have already sent it to Sapura Auto for 3 times concerning this issue. The first time, they suspect that the bearing problem, so they have check and change the bearing. Sound still appears. Second time, they said cannot hear anything. I was busy so I didn't make a big fuss over it. Third time, they said to me that all 320i engine has this characteristic. This I cannot accept because when the car was new, there were no such sound. Does anyone has this same problem? Maybe you could share your experience with me. Thanks in advance.:burnout:

Try Ingress Auto at Mutiara Damansara. All the capable ex-SA/AB technicians are there.

Hi Astroboy,
Thanks for your suggestion, however, since the car is still under warranty, I dare not let any other shops to check it except either SA or AB. Would like to know whether anyone has this problem too.

Oops Astroboy, sorry for my negligence. I just found out that Ingress is also an authorised BMW partner. Will take my car there for a check. Thanks.

On initial take off only or while driving then accelerate off? It could be the grabby brakes sound which releases like 1 sec after you let off the brake pedal and press the accelerator that you are hearing.

Ya, perhaps you could describe in more detail on the crunching noise, whether it occurs during acceleration from stand-still or acceleration while moving, etc. I have the 320i and I definitely don't have any noise during acceleration (from stand-still or while moving).

Some of us are meeting up this Sunday at Ingress Auto, so you may want to join us. Mabye you can take this opportunity to ask them, and also let us hear/see the problem 1st hand. ;)

Not exactly sure what is the "crunching" sound you are getting, but my experience with the 320i SE is this:
Upon take off (light acceleration), as the auto 'box changes from 1st to 2nd (or 2nd to 3rd in D mode), there is a slight "knocking" sound coming from somewhere at the gas pedal area, especially when engine is cold in the mornings...

Anybody experience this before?

Upon take off, if you briefly release the gas pedal as the auto 'box changes from 1st to 2nd (imagine you emerge from a parking lot, and a couple of seconds later u have to slow down to cross a hump), there is a slight "knocking" sound coming from the front...

Anybody experience this before?

Hey GHS, I have this problem too... but if you engaged in D mode, the gear start from 2nd gear. I suspect when u slow down to cross a hump, the gear actually drop to 1st from 3rd gear and causing the knocking sound

I'd got similar sound problem 1st week after I'd picked up the car from AB, sent back to AB 2nd week for 3 days thorough check and they solved the problem. Apparently there's a mysterious 10 cent coin found in the engine compartment.

Wow!! In the engine as in the crank case? or just in the engine compartment, outside the engine? Sounds like a sabotage!!

AB didn't elaborate to me in detail, just told me that they opened up the whole frontal engine bay to locate the problem, and found the 10 cent coins there, which I believe should be outside the engine...

10 sen coin cause crunching sound during pickup.... quite difficult to believe.. :( just hope it's "real" and not some "lame" excuse cooked up by the SC.. :(

Hmmm... I have to agree with Astroboy and I will never buy the reason given. Anyway, don't bother much la since it is solved now.
