Automotive Japanese Radios - some Secrets Unveiled
This page is dedicated to recording information on how to re-program radios in cars that came from the Japan market and are now being used outside Japan.

Eg: a vehicle is imported into New Zealand from Japan. The radio doesn't work properly in NZ because the NZ FM radio band is 88-108 (same as Europe) but Japan is 76-90 MHz.
Some vehicles, especially European brands, can be changed from Japan mode to Euro mode easily.
This web page tells you how.

BMW
From September 2001, BMW started fitting the same radio for all worldwide markets. The radio can be changed from one market are to another by accessing the radio's Service Mode. The means of accessing the Service Mode varies from radio to radio.

Accessing Service Mode for radio type C53/CD53 (without Multi-Info Display "MID", or TV screen) as fitted to E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E53 (X5), E83 (X3) or E85 (Z4)
Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'M' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the '+' and '-' keys or the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.
Turn the radio off to exit the service mode and store the settings.

The Service Mode settings are:
Software version: radio software yersion (week/year/version)
GAL: speed sensitive volume, 1=min effect, 6=max effect. No effect if DSP fitted.
F/Q: Field strenght and Quality. F1=min, F15=max. Q1=min, Q15=max.
DSP: shows 1 if DSP detected and working, otherwise 0.
TP Volume: Traffic Announcement volume level.
AF: Alternative Frequency (part of RDS service). Best set to Auto.
Index: Revision index.
Area: Market area. This is the setting to change when changing from Japanese to any other area.

These radios have an internal setting that sets the country they are in. There is a procedure for getting to these settings, then you can set it for the proper frequencies (88-108Mhz), instead of Japan (76-90Mhz).

Yours may be different, you may need to search further. I don't know if you have the radio that can be changed or not. Good luck.

To get to the setting, follow the following steps:

1. Turn off the radio,
2. Turn on the radio while pressing the "M" button until the display changes,
3. Use the "+" or "-" buttons to scroll down the following settings:

- SV39-98 41 - ? Not sure, Serial Number I think....

- GAL - Speed sensitive volume increase. Each volume increment shown is the change (increase) in system volume as the speed increases by 10 Kmh above a certain speed.
1-Lowest
6-Highest

- DSP 1.6 - Digital Sound Processor setting (only for models fitted with DSP sound system. Not applicable to most of us in Malaysia

- TP-V - Traffic report volume, this is the increase in volume whenever a traffic report is being delivered by some radio stations (but not in Malaysia I think) and the TP setting is ON
-9-Lowest
+9-Highest

- AREA - Region Setting for radio frequency.
ECE-Europe
US-US
CAN-Canada
OCE-Oceania/Asia pacific

- AF - Automatic Frequency search, when you press the up or down buttons or the "+" or "-" buttons in search for a radio station, in auto mode, the radio will look for the next available strong signal but in manual mode it will go up in small increments until you stop:
OFF=manual,
ON=Automatic

yours is with i-drive correct? The above procedures don't apply.
One option is to use the booster but may affect key sync (EWS) later.
More expensive option is to get Dension and re-programme - circa RM2.5K
Most expensive is you change the CCC (Computer) - circa RM9K

there is a thread on this dating back to 2008. Do a search.

bro arfan, ur new e60 from japan or uk?

I don't, for the time being. Just iPod (via Aux) and CDs.
Will do so when I get the Dension

Guys.... Is there any place in KL can do this (radio tuner) and also activate Malaysia NAVI map from JAPs map?

radio three ways to mod -
1. radio booster
2. mod CCC
3. replace CCC
1 to 3, cheapest to most exp

navi - no straightforward way, even replacing CCC won't do. You have to replace the whole navi system. Jap uses Hard disk while the rest of the world uses DVD

where to do it? a few shops. search some of the threads here. In fact, one guy posted he got contact on who can do it but the guy didn't answer some of my questions

today i was told tat japan spec navi can be done by re-formatting without replacing the whole navi system...how truth is this? can some1 verify tis? i asked him how much to retrofit the navi system...he told me no need retrofit anymore as our techo is so advance...just re-format entire things will do. is this truth japan spec no need replace whole navi system now? DANG!!!!!

So far, I got 2 contacts (one was found from a thread in this site and another was given by Thule) who can provide FM conversion (or so called CCC re-program). I am quite worry abt this process so need advice from sifu outthere who had done this before.

Is it safe doing this or not? (worry it will crash the iDrive)

Also, abt the Navi system (no need to change CCC like what ChookLeng was asking), anyone has a solution?

Thank you,
Ahtu
