My E39 had such symtom like what you guys are mentioning bove. It was fixed! Ok, it was always happenning when I turned my steering leftward around 20 degree while driving (like JKP issue) and produced a 'knocking' sound from the front left. But it happened only when the car speed was around 40km/h or during parking. I went to few shops to find out the problem but no one was able to tell. Most of them told me that my steering rod kaput that needed to change. Finally, I went to a tyre shop to change my tyres and asked for 4 wheel alignment. Guess what, that sound totally disappeared!!! So, I beleive that sound has to do with the wheel arm or anything tied to the front wheels. Perhaps, you guys can ask tyre shop to check on these things. Touch wood, this is not happenning to my E60. Hope this help.
