Hi bro, It's best to bring along a mechanic that is well versed in BMWs, they may point out any issues that needs immediate attention and of course it's associated cost. That's what I did when purchasing all of my current & previous UDMs, so far I've not encountered any major issues. Just normal wear & tear items. Since its a year 97 you may need to spend quite a bit on preventive maintenance if you decide to get the car, unless you know the previous owner personally or it comes with a bunch of service records. FYI cooling system is one of the weak points of an E39. Look out for leaks at the engine bay and the overall condition of the car. Like what bro Ariff Habshi said, try to avoid the 520i as its really underpowered. At least get a 523i. As far as I'm concerned only the early E39 batch that was sold in the states runs on 4-speed unit. I do own an E39 and its has been a real pleasure to drive her every single day. How I wish Its a 530i and not 528i haha. All the best in your hunt!
