As far as I know, there are only two engine block variations of the 6 potter engines used in the E36; the M50 & the M52. The M50 is the cast iron block used on the 320, 325 & the S50 M3. The M52 is the aluminium cast block used on the 328 & the S52 M3.From the naked eye, it is not easy to determine which model as the cover can be interchanged between both M50 & M52. The intake manifold is also different for the 2 engines, but there are also many 328s using the intake manifold from the 325.Hope this helps, further deliberation welcome
