The 3rd brake light started to malfunction in a weird way by intermittently staying on after driving! In one occasion it actually stayed on overnight. Naturally tendency is to think that the wiring must have shorted with other wires.I was glad after 2 trips to mechanic the problem appeared to be finally fixed. The chief mechanic (boss) removed the light control module and even the brake switch in the front of the car. The darn light was still on! So it's pretty clear it's something wrong at the rear half of the car. Eventually traced to a relay (beneath the rear seat) which controls the brake light. It can turn on the light even though the brake pedal is not depressed.
