Good day all, Just wanted to get some tips on the topic of o'haul the M50 2.0Also is it just me or can i cook a turkey in the engine bay of the M50 ?Excessive heat ? temp gauge stays 12 o'clock. Appreciate your feedback.I am also looking to go oversize on the pistons ! probably 2.5 cc size.any recommendations ? What kind of cost for the pistons ? and the total overhaul cost? Also what should i change when i have the engine n Gbox out ?Appreciate any feedback input ?CheersDom

12 o'clock sounds normal...but something tells me the engine bay heat is excessive...anyone else ?

Cheers
Dom

excessive compared to what??? but I think the M20 runs hot, so I'm not surprised if the M50 is the same.. But you can always do a physical temperature check with other E34 M50B20.

Yes, the engine bay is hot. I took the heat shield insulator off from the under of the bonnet because it was falling apart and catching on the fan. You can hardly put your hand on the bonnet after a hard run. Hmmm, if that is the case, I better a replacement before the heat cooks my paint.

on any bmw, the engine heat is awesome.. on the tempreture at center is normal cos you have the original thermostat 88deg. change to 73deg or 80deg should be fine..

as for the oversize pistons, i have a complete set of 2.5 internals pistons, conrods, crankshaft from my rebuilt..even the 2.5 vanos cams.60K milage.resting in my store..only dun have is the block and head.. going very cheap below RM400.00

regards.

Pussy, question for you. I have a E34 520i manual 1989. I dont know technical, but heres what my mechanic says. A small amount of white smoke from the exhaust is evident in the morning, when stationery. Engine oil consumption is also slightly more than normal. Cheap way out: top overhaul. I guess this means changing the gaskets. Problem is dunno if the pistons are in good shape when all is out in the open. Would your conrods etc be something I should be looking for in case I need to replace the pistons? If yes, I am interested. Sorry about the layman questions.

the white smoke is when the oil has sip in from the valve seals overnight..hence the blue smoke during start up, but when the smoke continues still, then it's your piston rings.. a major overhaul is needed..

but if it's just blue smoke during start up.. dun think its your piston rings..

my set up is for a M50 engine, yours is a M20 engine..

before you commit urself like this. please research further especially whether your current block can be bored to fit the larger pistons from the B25...

Checking b25 pistons

Hi Fabiyan...

not so much that it will fit or the block to be bored. I have 'other' plans for the parts. and yes will research more on that as well.

Thank you much for your advice.

Cheers

please bear in mind the cylinder head for the m50b20 and m50b25 have different valve sizes be it inlet valves or exhaust. m50b20 has a 30mm inlet/ 27mm exhaust, while the m50b25 has 33mm inlet/ 30mm exhaust.

you can rebore your b20 block to accept the b25 pistons but all the valve cutout on the b25 pistons are different and that itself can destroy or bend all the valves in the b20 head.

however if you have a vanos m50b20 in your car now, you can try at your own risk using the crank and conrods from the b25 mated to your original piston and head with b25 vanos cams from pussy, that will give you a smaller capacity than a original b25 but the longer stroke will give you a vast torque improvement. you may need the dme from the b25 as well.

hi leforte. thanks much on your input. What if I use the head from the B25 ??
My b20 is non vanos. So i'd expect to not use vanos on the b25. Will this then be a problem ? Also in this setup i dont think i can use the cams.

cheers

safe your cash and go buy a m50b25 half cut instead....the rebore, disassembly and all required parts like the a complete b25 head with all valves and cams, dme, wire harness, b25 maf would have already cost you the half cut in it self.

do more research before you part with your money...

go figure!

FYI what i suggested earlier is only feasible should you already have a vanos unit in your car. since you dont, why bother.
