howdy folks,just to share my recent experience.last monday,after work,started the car and noticed that the starter was weak turning the engine over.heck ...new battery due soon...or so i thought......continued driving and then the radio went off/on intermittently....hmm...i need a new radio too?&*^(*&^%&^###...!!!after awhile i noticed the temp and fuel gauge showing lower than previous.then the signal indicator green light illuminated dimly and flash frequency erratic,....then i noticed the tachometer dropping....literally...towards zero......and finally about 100 metres from home the engine stalled.tried starting...nothing......my immediate thoughts.....alternator!tueday morning....removed alternator and removed the voltage regulator/carbon brush assembly from d alternator and took it to the friendly electrical shop to have the brushes replaced and the battery charged.the brushes was worn way below limits (6mm).refitted everything back and voila.....:top:damage - carbon brush rm 25 - charge battery - rm4 - 1 day annual leave.,....he he....i like

moots, good report! Did you by any chance remember to snap a picture of the worn brush?

How much time is needed to deassemble and put back? And tools required?

I live in Bandar Seri Putra and may I know where is your friend place when time to change my brush later ....... Close to your place Bandar Baru Nilai ?

bro,i took 3 hrs....minus the trip to the elect shop for brush replacment.
no special tools required.

pics....sorry tada...
 
Thanks moots. Along the same topic, but different part, there's a voltage regulator component (Bosch voltage regulator 1197311021). I wonder how long that component last and I wonder how to know if it's still functioning well or not (don't tell me I have to hook up oscilloscope etc to test it).

Was thinking of getting my alternator in my 1995 e34 520 checked out. Do you guys frequent any particular electrical shop.

Any recommendations in PJ/KL area?

Thanks, any idea where i can get it done. I mean at a good place so that they dont mess things up.
