e30 m40 ... rev does not go higher than 5

hi all , i'm drivin a 1991 e30 m40 .... recently got it.. and i noticed that the revs do not go higher than 5.. whenver the revs hit 5000..it cuts off.. anyone have any idea why ??.. .. thx in advance

u can go by checking ur meter..

The M40 is a willing revver (compared to the in-line 6), so get ur engine/instruments checked ASAP.

I had similar problems before in my e30M20, it turned up to be a faulty AFM.

Aif flow meter....try to get some used ones from forumers and try if its problematic.

Main Culprits would be your air-flow meter or a worn camshaft and lifters. The M40 has a very weak camshaft and wears prematurely.

also check ur fuel pump and relay

very high chances its a worn cam...very common among the m40 engines...

i had mine replaced in feb 2006. a new one costs $200. the m40 camshft is inherently inferior. so changing to a new one helps. it is very very worn causing this annoying "diesel-like" noise.

rev doesnt go higher than 5 also

all sifuss.. my e30 320i has the same problem~ it doesnt wanna rev more than 5, but it doesnt cut off.it just wont go up anymore,how come? does it mean that the culprit is AFM? or Camshaft?

just that other day the only top speed i can get near is 145km/h .. which is ridiculous for an e30 rite? please hellllpp.its torturing to drive an e30 that is feeling like an old volvo 240.heavy and the fuel consumption is killing me!
