Dear All,I'm new here. So I'll introduct myself & then present my problem, seeking advise out there.I'm a Chartered Mechanical Engineering living in Bdr Sungai Long, Kajang.I bought my E30 M10 B18 Manual 1987 in London, UK in 1991.I've just replaced a Universal / CV joint on the long shaft (between the gearbox & diff). She cruises nicely upto 155km/h, with some vibrations 70-90 km/h. I reckon the shaft needs balancing. Can anyone / sifu's recommend any workshops with this type of experience. Many Thanks.Mike.

errr... are you certain your E30 has an M10 engine?

remove drive shaft boots, clean the bearings, then re-pack with new grease. oh, on-wheel balance yr fronts.

Yes sir. Definitely M10, timing chain. After combing in & out of the car for >18 years, I hope I've got it right.

Understand your solution is for the drive shafts between diff & brake hubs. But I don't get why 'on-wheel balance on front'?

My problem is in the long shaft - between gearbox & diff. The shaft is in 2 sections with 2 CV joints supported by central bearing.

Cheers.
Mike

Hello Mike, there is an old man near PJ Old Town who specialises in long shaft balancing. I have taken mine (from a M20B20 E30) to him to have the bearings replaced but he declined becasue the previous person who replaced the bearings did it in such a way as to damage the shafts. I would be glad to take you to him next weekend if you so wish. Would be glad to chat with you about my E30 project

i spent months and lots of money curing my E30's longshaft 'balancing' problem. in th end, it was the two puny driveshafts that need greasing. no more vibration above 100kmh.

onwheel fronts allow smooth running at 160kmh.

Hi VirtualMystic, Many Thanks for your posting. Of course I'd be very grateful if you could show & introduce me to the workshop. At the same time, we can also talk on E30's. I'll pm you my mobile no. and we can take it from there.
Warm Regards.
Mike

Update on my 'problem:'

New Replacement Long Shaft set: ~RM2,600

Assign machine-shop to check alignment of CV joints & balancing of 2 sections of shafts: ~RM1,200

Used replacement shafts (from kedai potong): RM350

So I took the cheapest option. Now solved, with a little (yet acceptable) vibration.

mike,

i think u still need to go for on wheel balancing for both front n rear wheels.

mizhan,

thanks 4 d usefull info.
